Barbara Melbourn

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, October 5, 2009 at the Luze Funeral Home in Highmore with Rev. Kent Atkinson officiating. Burial followed in the Highmore Cemetery. 

Barbara was born December 25, 1904 to David and Margret (Handel) Heckenlaible in Virgil, South Dakota. She was one of twelve children. In 1916, the family moved to Highmore. She attended rural country school until the 8th grade.

She married Myron Melbourn on April 11, 1920 at the Methodist Church in Highmore. They made their home in Van Order Township, on a farm purchased from Myron’s dad. In 1930, their son, Sherwood, was born. In 1956, they made a change and moved to Rapid City, where they went into the horticulture and floristry business. They returned to Highmore fifteen years later, Myron and Sherwood went back to farming and ranching. Barb owned and operated a florist shop in Pierre for a short time.

Barb enjoyed gardening, needle work and raising some sheep.

She is survived by one sister, Marcella Minning of Sacramento, California and several nieces and nephews.

Barb was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Myron and son, Sherwood.

Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Barbara's arrangements.
