Belva Martchinske, 78, of Faulkton, passed away Friday, November 1, 2013 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen.

Belva Hagedorn was born November 28, 1934 in Faulkton, SD to Herman and Etta “Irene” (Hopkins) Hagedorn. She attended rural country school and Faulkton High School. In high school Belva was active in band, glee club and chorus. Following school Belva taught country school for one year.

On September 13, 1952 Belva was united in marriage to Duane Martchinske. After this union they purchased Duane’s family farm, west of Miranda where they worked together to make their home and livelihood. They were blessed with three children.

When her children were young she was active in 4-H and served as a Foods Key Leader. Belva was also active in the United Church of Faulkton her entire life. She was active in the church, served as a Sunday school teacher, a member of the Joy Circle, and various committees.  She was active in DomestiKats Extension Club for over 50 years, the VFW Auxiliary,  and was a member of the Miranda Womens Club. Belva enjoyed crafting, scrapbooking, rubber stamping, finding new recipes, and bird watching. Belva's most enjoyable time was spent with children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, especially during the holidays and pheasant season. She lit up a room with her smile and laughter.  She loved making birthday cards and sending letters. She also enjoyed giving each grandchild a new Christmas decoration every year. Two of her life goals were to be able to dance at her children's weddings and to see all of her grandchildren obtain their education. These things showed what true love Belva had for her entire family.

Belva’s life will be cherished by her husband: Duane of Faulkton; her children: Jerry (Cindy) of Faulkton, Jan (Randy) Martinmaas of Orient, and Joe (Jodi Sieler) of Faulkton; nine grandchildren: Lisa Martchinske (Robby Richardson) Chris Martchinske (Stephanie Lacher), Kenny Martchinske (Jamie Meyers), Jenny (Cody) Sivertson, Jordan (Kelli) Rhodes, Jackson (Molly Lee) Rhodes, Jill (Justin) Christensen, Bill (Darci) Martinmaas, and Dalton Martchinske; 16 great grandchildren; two sisters: Barb Cooper of Sioux Falls and Beverly Biedenfeld of Faulkton; sister-in-law, Shirley (Bob) Payton of Rapid City and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister-in-law, Doris Wilson and one great grandson.

Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Belva’s arrangements.

  2. Belva and I met at college and remained friends all of these years. We did not see each other very often through the years, but always exchanged Christmas letters.
She was such a fun girl and we had so many good times together when were in Aberdeen at college.
I remember driving out to Faulkton to be a waitress at Duane and her wedding. I drove there by myself and felt like I was miles away from home! She was such a pretty bride.
I extend my prayers and sympathy to all of her family.
    Sheila
