Bernadine “Bernie” Vera Oakie was born November 10, 1947 at the Chasing Hawk Ranch to Herman G. Oakie and Mary P. Chasing Hawk. Bernie attended school at St. Joe’s in Chamberlain, graduating from the 8th grade there. She attended Stephan Catholic School on the Crow Creek Reservation until the 11th grade and completed her education at Brainerd Catholic School.

Bernie always had a smile for everyone and was always happy to greet you. She loved sewing, beading, and playing cards. Bernie was the firstborn daughter in her family, and as the oldest, she took care of her siblings. After her mother passed, she took on the responsibility of raising her nieces and nephews until they all got old enough to take care of themselves.

Bernie also loved to cook. She worked as a cook at the Red Scaffold Day School and in later years worked in the Cheyenne Eagle Butte School kitchen. Due to health reasons, she had to quit her job as a cook.

Bernie was blessed with two children, her daughter, Lizabeth E. Oakie and her son, Shane Joshua Glen Oakie. She was a happy mother, and she told her mother that she was blessed with her two children, a daughter and a son, and that was all she needed. Bernie spoiled her two children, and they were her life. During this time, she had her own home in Red Scaffold. Later, Bernie was blessed with her first grandson, Daren Oakie. She raised her grandson with the help of her younger brother, Richard Oakie.

Bernadine is survived by her children: Lizabeth Oakie and Shane Oakie all of Red Scaffold; 10 Takoja’s: Daren Oakie, Wendell Nezzie Jr., RyAnne Nezzie, Shayne Nezzie, Devin Nezzie, Augustine Collins, Joshua Oakie, Alissia Oakie, Trinia Oakie, and D’Shania Oakie all of Red Scaffold; sisters: Nadine Oakie, Eagle Butte and Germaine (Clark) Iron Hawk, Red Scaffold; brothers: Richard Oakie, Mobridge Golden Living Center and Rumanus (Del) Oakie, Red Scaffold; one great granddaughter, Justafied Oakie of Eagle Butte; and several nieces and nephews.

Luce Funeral Chapel of Eagle Butte has been entrusted with Bernadine’s arrangements.
