bobbie heidepriem

October 15, 1921 ~ September 2, 2007

Bobbie Heidepriem, 85, of Miller, died Sunday, September 2, 2007 at the Miller Good Samaritan Center.

Memorial Services were held at 10:00a.m., Tuesday, September 4, 2007 at the First Presbyterian Church, Miller, with Rev. Brian Jones officiating. Burial was in G.A.R. Cemetery, Miller. Reck Funeral Home of Miller was entrusted with arrangements.

Roberta Margaret Nelson was born October 15, 1921 to Robert and Margaret (Kohoutek) Nelson. The family farmed in Yankton County. Bobbie graduated from Yankton High School in 1939 and from Yankton College in 1943. While in school, she was active in theater and played violin in the orchestra. Bobbie taught business skills of shorthand and typing, first at Ravinia, and then Custer. In Custer she met Herb Heidepriem, who had recently returned from World War II, and whom she married in 1946. The couple moved to Vermillion where Herb finished school, and in 1948 received his law degree. Bobbie taught during this period in Meckling.

In January 1948, Herb and Bobbie moved to Miller, where they were partners in a land title company. Bobbie was Herb’s secretary when he started his law practice. They immersed themselves in the life of their new hometown. Bobbie not only helped Herb at the office, but she also joined him on the campaign trail as he ran successfully for Hand County State’s Attorney and State Senator. Bobbie was active in the First Presbyterian Church, Circle, Daughters of the Eastern Star, the Central Plains Arts Council, Miller Area Community Development Foundation, P.E.O., and the Hand County Historical Society, to name just a few. Perhaps more than anything, Bobbie Heidepriem will be remembered for her loyalty to her hometown and all who called Miller home.

Bobbie and Herb had four children, Stephen Clare, Nicolette (Nikki) Adair, Scott Nelson, and Rebecca Lynne. She was a devoted and loving wife and mother.

She is survived by three children: Nicolette Heidepriem, her husband Bruce Baird and their son William, of Bethesda, Maryland; Scott Heidepriem, his wife Susan and their sons Sam and Pete of Sioux Falls; and Rebecca Heidepriem of Milwaukee; and her brother, Lawrence (Buster) Nelson of Yankton, his wife, Nancy (Hooth) and their children and grandchildren.

Memorials may be directed to the Central Plains Arts Council, Miller Area Community Development Foundation, or the McWhorter Museum & Depot.

  1. Dear Scott and Family.
I would see your mother about evey morning if she was out in the
dinning room. I would always say something to her. You know me Scott!!! I would always tell her
the news or if I saw you on TV!!
Now she is in a better place
and she can watch over all of us.
She will know the news before we do!!!

  2. Nikki – I was sorry to hear of your mother’s death. I remember meeting her when you were both in Yankton several years ago. Your family is in my prayers. Sincerely, Kathy Grow

  3. On behalf of the South Dakota House and Senate Minority Caucus, we send our deepest sympathy to SD Senate Minority Leader Heidepriem and the entire family of Bobbie Heidepriem at the loss of your mother. May God give you strength during this sorrowful time.

  4. Carol ( Lassen ) Hedlund says:

Bobbie I really enjoyed having you guys as my neighbor when we lived across the alley from you and Herb. I can remember the first time I met you guys, you two and the Degeest’s came in the Lips cafe and Herb said are you the family that moved in by us and I said yes,he said there will be no parties in the neighborhood and then he laughed and I thought we have such great neighbors. Such nice wonderful people and Bobbie you were such a nice, polite person to wait on and you will be missed.
    God Bless
    Carol Hedlund

  5. I was greatly saddened by the passing of your Mom. When John Wilber, Chark Hart, and I used to come to your house and practice music with Steve, your Mom was always the most gracious host. I will always cherish my wonderful memories of Bobbie, Herb, and Steve. I wish you the very best.

  6. Kristin Kidwell Glockhoff says:

I haven’t looked at the Custer County Chronicle on line in many months, so I’m not sure why I checked it out this week, but I’m glad I did. I was sorry to read about Bobbie’s passing. My mother, Evelyn Kidwell, was best friends with Bernadine during their later years. Mom spoke so highly of Bobbie and the good care she took of Bernadine. Bobbie was also very kind to my mother, and took extra care to make sure she and Bernadine could continue their friendship even though they lived many miles apart and were not able to see each other in later years. Bernadine’s friendship was very dear to my mother, and Bobbie helped to make that possible. My sympathy to your family. (P.S. I met Nikki once at a Teen Republican Camp outside of Custer. I remember how beautiful she was and how well she presented herself to everyone she met.)

  7. As I think of Bobbie, I visualize an angelic smile with a tender heart. She was a dear soul and her presence will be missed. I rejoice in knowing that she’s at peace and enjoying her new home in heaven. God Bless You All, Nancy
