Funeral service was 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 6th at the St. Lawrence Community Church in St. Lawrence with Pastor John Rasko officiating. Interment was at the Wessington Cemetery.
Burton Orr Sargent was born June 15, 1928 to Johnnie and Laura Sargent on a farm east of Murdo, SD. They lived on several farms in Jones County before moving to Gilbert Township, Hand County in 1939 where he lived most of his life. He was happy to find friendly schoolmates at Brown School where he attended elementary school. He attended Miller High School and later South Dakota State Agricultural College.
Burton married Helen Dague on June 24, 1948. They lived in the Gilbert Township, Hand County, where they raised their four children. He was very active in his rural Wessington church, Tipton Community, and later attended the St. Lawrence Community Church when Tipton closed. He served on the Gilbert Township board, the Victory Bible Camp board and held several offices at Tipton Community Church. Due to his health he had to retire from farming in 1997.
Being a farmer was his main interest, but he also enjoyed working his cattle and hunting rabbits, pheasants and gophers. He loved music and his children remember his whistling while driving the open air tractor. He played a number of musical instruments, including the guitar, accordion, harmonica, organ and piano. He also amused his children and grandchildren with the silly songs he sang to them.
Survivors include three sons, Kirk (Christine) Sargent of Wessington, Kent (Elaine) Sargent of Wessington, Mark (JoAnne) Sargent of Huron; one daughter Kaye (Rudy) Vercler of Washington, IL; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother John Sargent of Wessington Springs; and one sister Elaine Martens of Huron. He was preceded in death by his brothers Kenneth and Roger.
