Carli Ann Haskell, 15, of Eagle Butte, passed away Tuesday, August 30, 2016 as the result of an automobile accident.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., MDT, Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at Cheyenne Eagle Butte Auditorium, Eagle Butte with Pastor Richard Nultemeier officiating. Burial followed in the Lantry Cemetery, Lantry, SD. Wake services were held at 7:00 p.m., MDT, Monday, September 5, 2016 at the Cheyenne Eagle Butte Gym with a procession from the 4 mile corner at 5:00 p.m.
Carli Ann Haskell was born on February 8, 2001 in Pierre, SD to Juli (Parker) and Fred Haskell. The youngest of three daughters, Carli was brought home to Lantry on a twenty below winter day where her sisters, Kelsie and Kolbi, along with their family friend, Kristine Traversie, excitedly greeted her. The older girls were so infatuated with her and constantly asked to hold her, but Fred constantly reminded them, “Don’t touch her, you’re gonna spoil her!”
Fred was right. Over the years, Carli was lovingly known as her “Mom’s little princess” because she was always at Juli’s side. At the time, the family owned Juli’s Country Casuals on Main Street and it became Carli’s second home. She napped in the tanning beds and under the clothes racks. When she needed a break from the store, her sisters were there to walk her up and down Main. The Haskell Girls could be found in J&P’s playing pool or Dean’s grabbing a snack or at the Habitat Office checking in with Aunt Kay and their best stop was always at Thompson’s where Grandma Phyllis worked.
Carli loved her extended family. Grandma Phyllis and Grandpa Darrel were the only grandparents she got to know, so she spent lots of time at their house doing puzzles, baking, and watching Grandma sew. Grandma and Carli often spent time during the summer with Aunt Connie in Kansas. Holiday dinners were always spent at Auntie Kay and Uncle Gregg’s, where her sisters and older cousins remained jealous of Carli’s family baby status, because she never had to sit at the kids’ table like had to when they were young.
Carli’s baby status was challenged at 10 years old when she became Auntie Carli to Justin Bentley and again at 14 years old when Dekker Jay came along. Auntie Carli and Justin showed their love by constantly arguing with each other. Dekker Jay became her baby and she was always napping with him. She loved her nephews and she will remain a big part of their life because of the close relationship she had with them.
As lucky as the Parker’s and the Haskell’s were to have Carli in their lives, so were Carli’s friends and their families. Over the years, she spent lots of time in the homes of Brandee Jewett, Frankie Rousseau, and Tammy & Glenn Gunville. She became so close to the Gunville’s that she called them her second family and was always included in their everyday lives.
Carli graduated from CRST Head Start and hit the halls of C-EB in 2006. While Carli gave her parents daily frustrations on getting up and going to school. However, once she got there Carli excelled at being a Brave. She consistently earned attendance and citizenship awards; participated in the Glitter Girls Dance Team; was nominated into the Gifted and Talented Program; charmed all her teachers with her bubbly personality and big dimpled smile, and gathered up friends as she was thee social butterfly. Carli’s importance to her friends can be explained by the forming of the HoopStars independent basketball team. Carli didn’t like to play basketball, but wanted to go with her friends on all the trips and her friends wanted her with them. On the first trip, her friends plotted a plan and showed up with Carli and all her bags. When asked why Carli was with them, they responded, “Well Kolbi is the high school manager so she is ours.” She never missed a tournament and other teams always got a good laugh when they heard why our little girls team had a team manager.
The Class of 2019 took the Junior High by storm in 2013 and Carli kept right on being Carli – she earned Honor Roll Awards, Perfect Attendance Awards, joined Student Council, attended summer Governor’s Camp, and became the school’s go-to manager for basketball and volleyball. The Junior High staff have many fond memories of Carli and her friends. While Carli was happy to earn her 8th grade promotion, she missed seeing her Junior High teachers and often went to check in with them after high school. Carli entered high school as a loud and proud Freshmen. Tiny, but with a mighty personality, she made a fast impression of being a good, kind student. She continued being team manager, earned more awards and a 3.0 GPA while holding a part-time job at Vilas.
Thankful to have shared in Carli’s life are her parents Juli & Fred Haskell; sisters Kelsie Haskell and Kolbi (Tristan Sampson) Haskell, nephews Justin Bentley and Dekker Jay, Grandma Phyllis Parker, Aunts & Uncles: Bruce & Dawn Parker, Connie & Wade McKenna, Kay & Gregg Bourland, Cousins: Justin Parker, Pam Parker, Jayce & Jessica Parker, George & Julie Jewett, Jayme & Gina Jewett, Jared & Jackie Bourland and Madisen Bourland & Shane Anderson. Carli was preceded in death by her grandparents Cardinal “Clete” & Mary Ann Haskell and Grandpa Darrel Parker; Uncle Jay Haskell; and special family friends, Jake and KC Longbrake.
Luce Funeral Chapel of Eagle Butte has been entrusted with Carli’s arrangements.
