Carole Mary Phillips was born November 10, 1939 at the Old Agency to Schuyler and Mildred (Scott) Phillips. She attended grade school at the LaPlant Public School and went to the Cheyenne River Boarding School, graduating in 1957. After graduation she went to the School of Commerce in Aberdeen for secretarial training. In 1991, Carole went back to school and graduated from Northern State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration.

In 1959, Carole married Donald “Duke” Dupree in Redwood City, California, where they lived and were employed. They returned to Eagle Butte and were both employed at the BIA; later they transferred to the Billings Area Office and then to Lame Deer, Montana. Carole spent the rest of her life working various tribal jobs on the reservation.

Carole was a member of the UCC Church in LaPlant, providing meals on Sunday after church. She truly had a heart of gold and was a very giving person who opened her home to anyone in need. She enjoyed going to horse races, going to the casino, playing bingo, planning family activities, and helping with the church and community activities, especially at Christmas.
