Charles Lee “Chuck” Byrum was born on August 10, 1935 in Lead, South Dakota to Stuart and Louise (Flansburg) Byrum. He graduated from Miller High School in 1953. He entered the United States Air Force on September 24, 1954 and was honorably discharged on September 23, 1962.

Chuck had several professions he enjoyed, a game warden, television repair man, and a telephone repair man working for Sully Buttes COOP until he retired. He also was an owner/operator of CB Hobbies, which was a distributor for L&L and Corrosion X Products.

He loved the outdoors; spending as many days as he could go hunting, trapping, and fishing. He had a business for many years guiding many fishermen on the Missouri River, which wasn’t a job to him, it was relaxing and enjoyable.

His memory will be cherished by his children: twin daughters, Leola “Lee” Byrum and Cindy (Brian) Washburn; daughter, Deborah Testerman, all of Gillette, Wyoming; sons: Michael (Donna) Byrum of Redfield, and Clyde (Sharon) Weber of Canyon City, Texas; 14 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; one brother, Kenny (Fran) Byrum of Bend, Oregon; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: James and Richard; sister, Gloria; and two sons: Charles Stuart and Harland Ray.

Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Chuck’s arrangements.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. We will miss our neighbor and friend. Over the years we have had many good visits and conversations about fishing and dogs and kids and weather. Especially about the "one that got away".
Rest in Peace Chuck and may you fish forever.

    Loren and Edith Wheelhouse

  2. Mark, Brenda & Sierra Heckenlaible says:

From the moment we met Chuck he was a friend, as a neighbor, a fellow outdoorsman, a mentor, and one to constantly dote on Sierra. Some of our favorite memories of Highmore were spending time in the back room cleaning fish with Chuck with him telling hunting, fishing, trapping, gardening, and work stories all the way from his youth on….no matter how many times he told the same story, the details never changed, each one etched in his mind forever.

Fish on my friend, and may you breathe in peace doing all that you love to do. You are missed.

  3. Will miss you Chuck. Getting old sucks.

  4. So sorry to hear of Chuck’s passing. Chuck was a dear friend of my Dad, Al Whiting. They spent many long hours on the Missouri together. I will always remember fishing with Chuck and my Dad every spring. Great times on the water, and even greater times telling stories at Chuck house while cleaning and cooking fish. Chuck was a good man….I will miss him.

  5. I met Chuck back in the 90’s fishing with Al Whiting and his son, Jeff. Al and Chuck were good fishing buddies and I became part of that "rat pack". I have communicated with Chuck via email for all these years as he always enjoyed my Striped Bass fishing reports / updates from here at Lake Texoma and my Canada fishing trips. I went walleye fishing with Chuck 20 times and I always learned something from him. HE WAS A REALLY GOOD WALLEYE ANGLER – ONE OF THE BEST I HAVE MET! Rest in Peace my friend!

  6. Monica Broadbent Swearingen says:

I wish I would have known of Chucks passing sooner I would have been there to support my family.

  7. Chuck guided myself and my son, Brandon, some years back on Lake Sharpe. It was 2 of the most enjoyable days I’ve ever spent on the water. So sorry to hear of his passing.
