Darren Dion Dupris, 36, of Eagle Butte entered the spirit world on April 6, 2007 at I.H.S. Hospital in Eagle Butte.
Funeral services were held at 10:00a.m. MST, Saturday, April 14, 2007 at the HV Johnston Cultural Center in Eagle Butte with Deacon Ted Knife and Helene Circle Eagle officiating. Burial was in the United Eagle Butte Cemetery under the direction of Luce Funeral Chapel of Eagle Butte. An all night wake service was held at 7:00p.m., Friday at the cultural center. The family processed in from the four mile at 5:00p.m. on Friday.
Dion was born on November 25, 1970 in Eagle Butte, SD to Joyce J. Banley and David D. Dupris. He spent much of his childhood on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation in Eagle Butte. He began his early school years at Eagle Butte and the elementary school in Rapid City, SD. He was a member of the Congregational Church of Eagle Butte. Around 1978, the family moved back to Eagle Butte where his mother, Joyce Banley, was employed by the Cheyenne River Headstart as a teacher. In the years that followed,
Dion attended the Cheyenne Eagle Butte schools. After high school he worked at odd jobs in and around Eagle Butte, including the Mini Mart and the Headstart.
Dion had a wide range of interests which included watching softball and listening to all kinds of music. He helped his mother, Joyce, raise his nephews: Matt Dupris and Tyler Garreau, and his nieces: Toni Dupris and TaLonna Bear Eagle, who will miss him greatly.
Dion came from a very large Tiosaye from Oglala, Cherry Creek, Red Scaffold and Pine Ridge communities.
He is survived by his mother, Joyce Banley, and his father, David Dupris, Sr.; sisters, Kara and Donita Dupris all of Eagle Butte; half brothers, David Dupris Jr., Alfred Dupris and Alan Dupris of Cherry Creek; uncles, Thad (Pam) Banley Sr. of Aberdeen, Ed Banley of Spearfish, Duane (Rosie) Banley of Sparks, NV and Steve (Darlene) Vance of Cherry Creek; aunts, Romaine Dupris of Eagle Butte, Stella Walking Eagle, Delinda Dupris and Georgianne Dupris all of Cherry Creek; grandparents, Matthew and Eleanor Bad Heart Bull, Ellen In The Woods, Oliver Brown Wolf, Margaret Eagle Staff, Katherine Eagle Staff, Zona Eagle Staff, Ester Hale, Shirley Circle Bear and Roy Circle Bear; nieces: Toni Dupris and Talonna Bear Eagle; nephews: Matt Dupris and Tyler Garreau; and many many cousins, nieces, nephews and extended families of aunts and uncles.
Dion was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, John M. and Stacie (Eagle Staff) Banley; paternal grandparents, Chauncey and Verna (Circle Bear) Dupris; uncles, Lowell A. and Leslie G. Banley; aunt, Alta Pumpkin Seed; nephews, Leslie G. Dupris, Stetson Annis and Clayton D. Dupris and cousins, Dorrey and Latoya Brown Thunder.
