David O. Johnson, 75, of Faulkton, passed away, Thursday, February 21, 2013 at the Faulkton Healthcare Center.  

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, February 25, 2013 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Faulkton, with Pastor Tammy Craker officiating.  Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, February 24, 2013 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the funeral home.

David Johnson was born November 10, 1937 to Floyd Sr. and Irvina (Weeks) Johnson in Bath, SD. He attended school and graduated from Bath High School in 1956. Following High School he, along with his brother Jerry enlisted in the United States Army using the buddy system. Together they were able to do the training and assignments, which lead them to Hawaii. While serving in Hawaii, David learned to surf. He was also able to experience a volcano rupture which led them to having to move their camp due to lava. During the later part of his service, he worked on radio equipment while serving time in Cambodia. He was honorably discharged in 1961.

David returned to Aberdeen where he worked from 1961 to 1963 for Twin City Roofing. Then in 1963 he went to work for Dahme’s Construction, as a backhoe operator. He greatly enjoyed this work and was very good at it. Many companies’s specifically requested David as their operator. In 1992 he retired due to health reasons.

On April 22, 1966 David married Diane Olson; to this union Shayne, Kevin and Lisa were born. On September 30, 1978 he was united in marriage to Sharon Raethz. Together they made their home in Aberdeen. One daughter, Denise, was born.  On February 14, 2002, David became a resident of the Faulkton Healthcare Center until his passing. 

David enjoyed his free time gardening, he could grow anything. He also liked to fish, hunt, go golfing or bowling; but most of all he loved watching his grandkids.

David’s life will be cherished by his wife Sharon of Faulkton; his sons: Shayne (Shannon) of Burlington, NC and Kevin of Graham, NC; his daughters: Darcy Raethz of Watertown, Lisa Johnson of Redfield and Denise Hill of Faulkton; his grandchildren: Brooklyn, Morgan, Justin, Trevor, Ole, Emily, Sophie, Christopher, Bryanna and Brandon; his siblings: Irvin “Bud” (Vianne) Johnson of Willow Springs, MO, Clifford Johnson of Sioux Falls, Ada (David) Krista of Sall Creek, WI, Lelah (Cyril) Krista of Chippewa Falls, WI, Robert (Judi) Johnson of Rapid City, Lewis (Linda) Johnson of Chippewa Falls, WI, Ronald “Gene” (Karen) Johnson of Mineral Wells, TX, Ruth (Doug) Askland of Eau Claire, WI, Larry (Cathy) Johnson of Sioux Falls and Gary (Kathy) Johnson of Aberdeen; sisters-in-law: Grace Johnson of West Bend, OR, Norma Johnson of Black Hawk, Deb Johnson of Aberdeen; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son Craig; brothers: Jerry, Richard, Delbert, Edward and Floyd Jr. and one sister in law, Margaret Johnson.

Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with David’s arrangements.
