Derald Dean “Dean” Hanson was born April 14, 1957 in Gettysburg, SD to Derald and Mary (Larrington) Hanson as the youngest of five children. He graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1975. Dean was well known in the area for his athleticism in basketball, football, and track during his high school years and went on to play football at Northern State University for one year before deciding farming would be his lifelong passion. He also spent a few winters with his brother Dave in Colorado working home construction during the slow months of farming.
In August of 1985 Dean married Jackie Emmert. They made their home in Gettysburg where he continued to farm with his father. During the early years of marriage, Dean and Jackie spent a lot of time with friends on co-ed leagues and Dean continued to be active with many local sporting teams. When he wasn’t busy on the farm you could usually find him golfing, skiing, and cheering on the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Twins.
In 1989, they welcomed a daughter, Brittany and in 1991, a son, Jason. He loved watching his children grow up and was always supportive of their interests and activities and could be found cheering on the sidelines at sporting events. Dean shared his passion of farming with Jason and in 2009 they began farming together full time. In 2015, his first grandchild, Dominic was born followed by two little girls, Kollins in 2017 and Kapri in 2020. Dean was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He will truly be missed by those who knew him.
Dean and Jackie had a love for the Black Hills and in 2011 purchased their first home there. They enjoyed skiing, snowmobiling and other winter activities. They split their time between their homes enjoying what both areas had to offer.
Those left to cherish Dean’s life are his wife, Jackie of Gettysburg; children: Brittany (Jeremy) Luder of Moncks Corner, SC and Jason (Keri) Hanson of Gettysburg; grandchildren: Dominic Luder of Moncks Corner, SC and Kollins and Kapri Hanson of Gettysburg; his parents: Derald and Mary Hanson of Sioux Falls; father-in-law: Glen Emmert of Gettysburg; siblings: Dave (Renie) Hanson of Granbury, TX, Patty (Jerry) Jones of Spencer, IA, Bill (Cheryl) Hanson of Sioux Falls, and Diana Anderson of Sioux Falls; brothers and sisters-in-law: Dave (Priscilla) Emmert of Mitchell, Sandy Wager of Gettysburg, Julie (Jim) Fleck of Mandan, ND, Mark (Theresa) Emmert of Lincoln, NE, and Jodie (Jeff) Miles of Conde; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents; mother-in-law, Janice (Kessler) Emmert; and brother-in-law, Curt Anderson.

Dean was the best brother in law EVER – he always put up with us Emmert girls invading his space at any moment. He would grin and bear it and mix a drink! One of the craziest memories was when we were playing old 45 ‘s (name that tune) in the basement and he started throwing them all over . I loved that man , he and my sister were total soul mates that were inseparable. Not all couples have that kind of Love. You were the best dad and papa as well ! You are going to be missed forever !
Love your favorite sister in law – Julie

I'm Curt's brother(Diana's brother in law). I just wanted to say the entire family you are in my prayers and May God give you peace and strength during this time.
Jackie, there are no to express the sorrow I feel for you and the children. It is the hardest thing you will face but take comfort in the Lord. God Bless and keep you and shine his light down upon all of you. It is so hard to lose we love and think will always be there for us. At dads graveside a friend of mine took a cup of dirt and gave to. I sprinkled some in 5 holes, asked God to bless this soil and planted perennial flowers last summer it gives me piece of mind that my dad made them grow tall and beautiful and there are times I just sit by them and talk to my dad. He hears me and everyday guides me and looks after me and my children and sweet grandchildren.
Mark, Theresa and family – We are so sorry for the loss of your brother-in-law. A donation has been made in his memory to the Gettysburg Country Club.

My deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to Jackie and your families. There are not words to express how badly I feel for you. Just a week ago I was going through some old pictures and found some hunting pictures of Dean and myself as well as Rod Lemler, Tom Kula and Mike Rausch. We were being our normal goofball selves as you can see in the picture. I was showing the picture to my wife Kathi, who has never met the guys and when I got to Dean I told her he was my best friend, someone I knew since my mom taught him in country school. I told her he was a stud and I believe one of the best athletes to ever wear a Battler uniform. A ferocious competitor, but once off the field/court/track the epitome of a nice guy/person. I told my wife that as I get older I regret falling out of touch with people I grew up that meant so much to me and Dean was at the top of my list. I told myself I was going to change that. I've got ton's of great memories of Dean as I am positive so many people do, and who will miss Dean immensely. One weekend when I was home from college Dean and I spent a Saturday night hanging out and having fun as we often did. When I got back to school that Sunday I got the word that he was in a car accident – on his way home after we had said goodbye. I called around and finally got someone who knew what was going on and they said he was fine but broke his jaw. I came home again the next weekend to see how he was doing and as I was pulling into town I saw a brand new silver car parked in the East Side Drive-In parking lot. I had never seen the car and had no idea who was in it, but something told me I should stop and see, so I did. I pulled up next to the car and as the window went down I could see it was Dean, with his trademark grin and a wired jaw. He lifted his hand which had a beer in it with a straw and said…"get in." My friend, when I see you again I want that same greeting, sans the straw. Until then Dean…
So sorry to hear this news! Dean was a classmate, great athlete, and a friend to many. My prayer is that God would comfort the family during this time of sorrow and give you all hope for the future. Jeff/Bridget Hottman
We are thinking of you in your time of sorrow and wishing you strength in the days ahead. Our deepest sympathy goes out to you all. So very sorry for your loss of Dean.

Jackie, Dave & Family, Our hearts are just broken hearing the news of Dean's passing. Being older than Dean we did not get to know him very well till recently when we would see you in Sturgis ~ what a great guy. And older brother, Dave always spoke so highly of him. I cannot imagine what you are going through but trust God and he will get you through it. Know you all are in our thoughts and prayers.
Jackie and family,
