Derald Hanson, 90, of Gettysburg, passed away Sunday, August 9, 2020 at Dow Rummel Village, Sioux Falls, SD.
Visitation was held from 4:00p.m. to 6:00p.m, Sunday, August 16, 2020 at Luce Funeral Home, Gettysburg. A graveside service was held at 10:00a.m., Monday, August 17, 2020 at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Gettysburg with Father Jerry Kopel presiding.
Derald Hanson, son of William and Williaminna “Minnie” (Lemler) Hanson, husband of Mary (Larrington) was born on August 15, 1929 in Gettysburg, South Dakota. His childhood was spent with his brother, Richard on the family farm northwest of Gettysburg.
Derald attended rural school until eighth grade, then farmed alongside his father. He married Mary Larrington on October 22, 1947 and they had five children: David, Patty, Bill, Diana, and Dean. He was the President of the Holy Name Society of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and served as a county commissioner for eight years. He retired from farming after 60 years and they moved off the farm into an apartment in town.
Derald and Mary enjoyed taking many trips to different parts of the United States and Europe and they made friends wherever they traveled. They also enjoyed playing cards and every morning for several years they would play a game or two of Cribbage. Derald enjoyed playing card games at the Gordon Card Pallor in Gettysburg and later at the casino in Mobridge. If you ever went into Gas N Goodies you might have found him playing the machines, chewing on Tootsie Rolls.
Derald is survived by his wife, Mary; his children: David (Maureen) Hanson, Granbury Texas, Patty (Jerry) Jones, Spencer, Iowa, Bill (Cheryl) Hanson, Sioux Falls, SD, Diana Anderson, Sioux Falls, SD, and daughter-in-law, Jackie Hanson, Gettysburg, SD; eleven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Margaret Larrington; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Richard; his son, Dean; and his son-in-law, Curt.
Derald was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and he always had a smile for all of us and we will definitely miss him!!!
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Derald’s arrangements.

Back in the 1960s, we formed a new 4-H club called “Country Pals.” Families included my own, Hinkley’s, Holzworth’s, Thomas’s, Heath’s, Joe Hanson’s and Derald Hanson’s. We took turns having club meetings at each other’s houses. It was a family affair. Kids would have a meeting and play screaming games outside. Parents would play cards and visit. These were good times and good memories. My parents passed in 2004-my mom and 1983-my dad. They would have been of similar age to Derald & Mary. My condolences to your family. Losing a parent is tough! ✝️
Prayers are being sent to the Hanson family~ continue to cherish all the memories. Dean and Derald can farm from the Heavens fields.
So sorry for your loss. Thoughts & prayers for peace for the family.
Sorry for your loss
Bill and Cheryl, our thoughts ad prayers are with you and your family, losing a parent is very difficult no matter what age.
We are so sorry for your loss. It is hard to lose our parents and I am sure your dad will be missed by many. The comfort we have, is knowing he is in a loving home again. You are all in our prayers.
David, Patty Bill, Diana, Jackie, and families,
We were so sorry to hear of Uncle Derald's passing. I am so glad we were able to visit with him and your mom before they moved from Gettysburg. I also remember bringing my family to Gettysburg for another visit and being invited to the farm for a meal and playing Dimes afterwards. Your dad was always so friendly and easy to talk to. So much loss for you in recent months. I pray God gives you the strength you need at this time and that you'll remember your dad with a smile, and all the good times you had together.
With Sympathy,
Steve and Judy (Larrington) Seefeld.
