Martin "Dick" J. Carmody, 76 years, 3 months and 21 days, of Harrold, passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at the Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 5, 2011 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Stephan, SD with Father Gary Lantz, celebrant. Burial was held in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery at Parkston, SD with military honors. A Wake and Rosary service was held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, March 4, 2011 at the church in Stephan.
Martin “Dick” was born to Margaret (Moeller) and Martin J. Carmody on November 8, 1934 at Parkston, South Dakota. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and graduated from Parkston High School in 1954. On July 8, 1955, he enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged on May 3, 1957, receiving the expert Rifle M-1 and Good Conduct Medals.
After the service, Dick worked for the South Dakota Livestock Sanitary Board for 18 years. Dick then moved to the Gregg Ranch of Harrold, South Dakota, where he resided until 2007. Following a bout with cancer, in 2007 he moved to the Highmore Healthcare Center until the time of his death.
Dick is survived by his sister, Mary Ann Kortmeyer of Spearfish, SD; brother, Bill (Betty) Carmody of Mitchell, SD; brother-in-law, Ray Konstanz of West Bend, WI; 8 nephews and 12 nieces: Mike (Robin) Konstanz, Shelley (Steve) Krueger, Dale Konstanz, Dawn Skerry, Dayna (Wayne) Rigot, Scott (Gina) Kortmeyer, Todd (Beth) Cowan, Patti (Ed) Werdel, Mari (Randy) Shaull, Tigh (Jill) Cowan, Caly (Greg) Dirk, Shannon (John) Daly, Tork (Melissa) Cowan, Treg (Renee) Cowan, Joe (Christy) Carmody, Trina (Jake) Lunders, Tammi (Dean) Welch, Susayn (Art) Lincon, Christy Carmody, and Patti Carmody; and numerous great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his sisters, Carleen and Elayne; brother-in-law, Pat Cowan; nephew, Douglas Mark Cowan; and niece, Pam Elayne Carmody.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the Dick Carmody Memorial Fund, PO Box 455, Highmore, SD 57345.
The family would like to thank the Highmore Healthcare Center for the care he was received the last three years.

So sorry to hear about Dick. He was a such a gracious man at the Health care center. Always helping the ladies to be seated. He always had kind words and friendly greeting for everyone. He will be greatly missed. God bless and comfort all who knew and loved him.

Our sincere condolences to the family. Dick was a great guy with the best sense of humor. He will be missed greatly by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. We feel blessed to have been two of those people.
So sorry to hear about Dick. Our 2 little Grandsons thought he was the “biggest best cowboy they ever seen”. He was a kind man.All our sympathy to his family.

Really Did not know Dick until he was my mom’s next door nieghbor at the Health Care Center. Got to know him best out front while he was having his smoke. He got to know my wife Wendy when she worked there and always asked about her. Such a good caring man.God Bless Him.

So sorry to hear of his passing, I have so many memories of visiting with Dick in the pastures over at Chaney Rush. Whenever he saw us working on fence or water line he always stopped over to see if he could lend a helping hand, he was a man with a big heart.
Have missed passing Dick out and about for the last few years, it was always a pleasure to pass him along the road and see his smile and great big wave. It was a treasure just to stop and visit once in awhile. He will be missed. Love and Prayers to all his extended family.
