Don Johannsen, 60, of Miller, SD died Wednesday, April 2 at his home after a courageous two year battle with melanoma. Visitation was Sunday, April 6 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Miller from 4:00-7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service. Funeral service was at Trinity Lutheran Church Monday, April 7 at 2:00 p.m. Burial was at Hillcrest Cemetery in Miller. Rembold Funeral Home of St. Lawrence was entrusted with Don?s arrangements.

Don was born August 8, 1947 in Huron, SD to Herman and Edna Johannsen of Artesian, SD. He grew up on the family farm and attended grade school in the country school close to his home. Don attended and graduated from Forestburg High School. In 1969 he graduated from Augustana College in Sioux Falls with a degree in mathematics.

On June 13, 1970 Don married Susan Bruget in Armour, SD. They set up a new home in Iroquois where Don taught school until 1978. Don changed occupations and worked for Zip Feed in sales from 1978 to 1998. Don?s hard work and helping attitude made him friends with many people in rural South Dakota during that time. Don began insurance sales with Heartland State Bank and later worked in insurance at American Bank and Trust in Miller until December 2007.

Don was an avid fisherman and hunter, teaching his boys the pleasures associated with the outdoors, family and sportsmanship. Don was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Miller.

Don?s garden was always bountiful and he never tired of planting trees and rearranging the landscape. Don even tolerated Sue?s horses with a smile.

He is survived by his wife Sue of Miller; three sons, Nick (Jill) Johannsen of Madison, SD, Neil (Darcy) Johannsen of Baton Rouge, LA, Marc Johannsen of San Diego, CA; one brother Jim (Susan) Johannsen of Artesian, SD; one sister Marlys (Le Roy) Larsen of Vermillion, SD; and three grandchildren Jayden, Jacee and Andrew. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Life was never dull with Don. He will be greatly missed by his family and all his friends.
