Doris Deiter
December 18, 1925 ~ May 15, 2008
Doris Deiter, 82, went to meet her Lord on Thursday, May 15, 2008 at the Faulkton Area Medical Center. She was at peace and surrounded by her loving family.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, May 19, 2008 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Faulkton with Rev. Rob Nedbalek officiating. Burial was in the Faulkton Cemetery. Visitation was held from 3:00-7:00 p.m., Sunday, May 18 at the church with a 7:00 p.m., prayer service.
Doris Louise Matter was born on December 18, 1925 to Elmer “Doc” and Hilda (Riechers) Matter in Faulkton, SD. She rode her horse 2 ½ miles to country school beginning at age 5. In the sixth grade, the family moved to a farm just west of Orient. Doris graduated from Orient High School in 1943. After graduation Doris and longtime best friend, Betty Matter, began a summer adventure by train that ended in California. Along the way they earned money by working as hospital aides. After returning to Orient she worked at the elevator keeping books. World War II beckoned her to Omaha, Nebraska to work in the bomber plant. When the war was over she came home and worked in the Faulk County Extension Office.
After her marriage to Kenneth Deiter on April 14th, 1948, they resided in Faulkton, SD at which time, they owned and operated Deiter Implement. They later sold the implement business and moved to the current farm location in 1955. Upon retirement from the farm in 1987, they returned to their original location back in Faulkton where Kenneth continues to make his home.
As wife, mom, grandma, great grandma, and friend we remember her as one of the strongest women we ever knew. Some of our fondest memories of G’ma Doris centered around her kitchen table and her unique ability to “do anything”. Her family, friends, and employees knew that at meal time to be “on time” and expect a meal fit for a king. Her hands will be forever remembered for their ability to cook, sew, garden, knit, heal, love, comfort, and play. She loved watching all sorts of athletics and one of her final words were “ those dummie Twins lost again”.
Living through the dirty thirties instilled in her the value of family, faith and hard work. Doris’ number one priority was her family and the Lord. Her beliefs never wavered, nor was her integrity ever compromised. She was very involved in church and church related activities including quilting, WELCA, alter society, and other various behind the scene activities. Fond memories have been shared by many in regard to her patience in teaching them to sew through 4-H. She enjoyed time with friends, shooting darts, playing cards, and an occasional recreational trip to the casino.
Grateful for having shared Doris’ life are her husband of 60 years, Kenneth; four children born to this union Barbara (Bill Jr.) Schilder of Faulkton, Douglas (Sandy) Deiter of Faulkton, Darlys Haan of Rapid City, and Roger (Beth) Deiter of Faulkton. 12 Grandchildren: Nikki (Ryan) Melius, Justin (Stevie) Schilder, Heather (Beau) Wisness; Angie (Kent) Borstad, Kelly (Sam) Aesoph, Kevin (Carrie) Deiter, Lindsay (Ryan) Martenson; Terra (Ty) Pivonka, Trisha (Greg) Rieffenberger, Travis Haan; Shauna and Chelsea Deiter. 17 Great-grandchildren: Morgan, Peyton, Addison, and Spencer Melius; Amelia Wisness; Makenna, Madison and Trevor Boss; Jack, Alex, Isabel and Anna Aesoph; Avery, Camryn and Charlie Deiter; and Grace and Max Martenson.
Preceding her in death were her mother, father, and brother.
In lieu of flowers, Doris preferred memorials to be given to Our Savior Lutheran Church and Faulkton Area Medical Center.
Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Doris’s arrangements.
