Dorothy M. Fischer, 92, of Gettysburg, passed away Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at the Avera Gettysburg Hospital.

Funeral services was held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, January 16, 2017 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gettysburg, with Pastor Timothy Koch presiding. Burial followed in the Gettysburg Cemetery. A prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, January 15, 2017 at Luce Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior.

Dorothy Marie Koch was born October 14, 1924 in Highmore, SD to Carl & Maude (Myers) Koch. She attended country school at Franklin and two years of high school in both Gettysburg and Highmore. Dorothy continued her education at Madison and Spearfish, where she received her teaching certificate. She taught at Franklin School for a few years until her husband returned from the war.

On September 4, 1945, Dorothy started her married life with Wilfred Fischer of Gettysburg. They made their home on the Gerald Myers Ranch before moving to the Steensen Ranch. Eventually they moved to the Crane place where they raised their family of six. 1985 Wilfred and Dorothy remodeled a home in Lebanon where they remained until 1994. After Wilfred’s passing, Dorothy moved into an apartment on Main Street in Gettysburg before moving to the Villa. In 2009 she entered the Avera Oahe Manor where she resided at the time of her passing.

Throughout the years, Dorothy was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Lebanon, serving as a Sunday School Teacher, Bible School leader, sang in the church choir and helped with the Lutheran Ladies Aide. She also stayed active in the Lebanon Birthday Club, Lebanon Legion Auxiliary and VFW Auxiliary. Dorothy enjoyed gardening, making wedding and birthday cakes, and raising her family.

Dorothy’s life will be cherished by her children: Ron Fischer of Gettysburg, Judy (Marlyn) Haiwick of Whitewood, Kathy (Charles “Bill”) Percy of Cheyenne, WY, Kaylynn Goergen of Sturgis, and William (Vicki) Fischer of Gettysburg; daughter-in-law, Laurie (Steve) Robbennolt of Gettysburg; grandchildren: Tammy (Chris) Olson, Heidy (Raymond “Butch”) Crawford, Bob (Gina) Haiwick, Cody Haiwick, Amber (Andy) Mikkelsen, Megan Fischer, Tyler (Kelsey) Fischer, Michael Fischer, Kim (Ben) Luckey, Travis Percy, Dustin Percy, Carolynn Hegstrom, Jered Hegstrom, Bridget (Jason) Nagel, and Wade (Bailey) Fischer; 35 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and one sister Bessie Husband of Pierre.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wilfred; son, Donald Fischer; grandson, Donald Jerome “DJ” Fischer and a sister, Delma Fischer.

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Dorothy’s arrangements.

A Visitation was held on January 15, 2017 at 6:00 PM at Luce Funeral Home Gettysburg, 502 E Commercial Ave in Gettysburg, South Dakota 57442
