Dr. James H. DeGeest, 90, of Miller, died Monday, December 01, 2014 at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller. Visitation will be Thursday, December 4 from 5-7 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service all at the First Presbyterian Church in Miller. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 5 at the First Presbyterian Church in Miller with Rev. Brian Jones officiating. Burial will follow at the G.A.R. Cemetery in Miller.

Jim led a full life with amazing accomplishments, this despite his claim that he spent most of the first and second grades sitting in the hallway outside his classroom due to disciplinary problems. He later straightened out and became a Navy pilot and a medical doctor.

The son of Peter Alexander and Daisy Maude (Andrews) DeGeest, Jim was born March 16, 1924 in Miller, SD. He attended elementary and high school in Miller, graduating as valedictorian in 1942. After graduation, Jim attended the University of South Dakota before enlisting in the US Navy where he received his pilot training, attaining the rank of Ensign.

After his military service, Jim married his high school sweetheart Shirley Elaine Dristy on March 15, 1947. He attended medical school at the University of Minnesota and completed his education in 1953. Jim, Shirley and their three children moved to Goodhue, MN where he began his practice of medicine. In 1957 Jim answered a call to return to his hometown which was in desperate need of a physician. Jim and Shirley and their four children moved to Miller where Jim was a general surgeon and family practice physician, delivering countless babies, making house calls, and caring for families from birth to old age. For many years Jim was the only doctor serving the town and surrounding area. Shortly after moving to Miller child number five was born. Jim and Shirley lived there the rest of their lives, although they spent many wonderful warm winters in Sun City, AZ. They were devoted to each other, and their marriage was an inspiration to their children and others who knew them. Shirley passed away in February of 2000.

In his later years, Jim was blessed with a caring and devoted relationship with Gladys Dietrich. They enjoyed playing golf, bridge, and spending warm winters in Arizona with friends. Gladys was a comfort and a joy to Jim, and remains so for the rest of the family.

Besides his great love of family, friends and medicine, Jim also enjoyed flying his Piper Comanche N753SP, water and snow skiing, boating, dancing with his beloved bride, SCUBA diving, playing golf, solving crossword puzzles, feeding and watching the birds, playing bridge and playing pool at the Senior Center. His children have great memories of family vacations, usually spent at cabins on Green Lake in Minnesota and other lakes. Jim was very civic-minded and spent many years of service on the Miller School Board, in Kiwanis, as a director of a local bank and on the Hand County Hospital Board. Jim was a lifelong member of the Miller First Presbyterian Church where he was baptized, confirmed and served as an elder.

Those who are honored to have called him Dad are Sally Sisk of Aberdeen, SD; Jill (Riley) Nelson of Spicer, MN; Pete (Dwan) DeGeest of Miller; Steve (Tina) DeGeest of Andover, MN; Julie (Ernie) Fiala of Redwood Falls, MN; and Edgar Flores of Guatemala. Jim had 13 adoring grandchildren, Matthew (Danielle Schwarting) Sisk, Brett (Rebekah) Nelson, Gina (Eric Lieman) Nelson Lieman, Ben (Jessica Embry) Nelson, James (Brittany) DeGeest, Chris (Ronalee) Johnsen, Dannielle (Troy Jensen) Kappler, Patrick DeGeest, Charles (Jamie) DeGeest, Samuel DeGeest, Claire DeGeest, Brian Fiala, Megan (Taylor) Nicolaisen; 16 great-grandchildren; and two step great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death are his wife Shirley, his parents and his sister (Dorothy) Joan DeGeest.

Memorials have been established to the Miller Community Center, Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital and the First Presbyterian Church of Miller.

comfort. As I grew up he was my Dr…. what incredibly caring, iligent Physician.
My mom(Charlotte Schaefers)was a nurse(RN) for 51 years at the hospital. There is not enough space here to list the accolades, immense
admiration, respect she had for Dr. DeGeest. Fellow Miller WW 2 veterans, especially Jim inspired, motivated me to start the
SD WW2 Honor flights to DC.
    Jim’s WW2 service motivated
us to send 1,200 of his comrades to their WW memorial.I was so fortunate to be with him on his Honor Flight. What an experience.
I trust God has welcomed his
    his faithful servant Jim into
his heavenly home. What a reunion of family, friends,
former patients… it must be! Rest in Peace. Shalom.

  19. Many, many fond memories of the DeGeest family.
Jim, Shirley and tribe took in a homesick country girl and let me stay with them as I came to the big city of Miller for my freshman year in highschool.
I learned that you need to pull the shades in the bedroom when you live in town.
DeGeest/Engelmann family outings at Lake Louise were great times. I had my first (and last) water skiing adventures with the DeGeest crew.
These are only a few of many wonderful memories.
Your Dad will be greatly missed, and – was loved by many.
    Melita

  20. Our sympathy to the DeGeest family.
We remember moving to Miller in 1973 when we were 8 months pregnant, and Bob was beginning his first year of teaching. We were so blessed to have such a kind doctor deliver our first son Kirby Lee, and to continue as our family physician for four years. Our prayers were answered. Bless all of you.
    Shirley and Bob

  21. Dear Degeest family,
This is Mike, speaking for my dad, and for all of us. Frank & Jim’s friendship was old and strong, having been forged in the adversity of WWII, and it lasts still. Frank, and all of us, will always miss Dr. Jim, and our prayers are with you at this sad time.

  22. We are so sorry for your loss. Doc Jim was a super nice man. Which, fortunately, we got the pleasure of knowing through Aunt Gladys. He will be greatly missed by many. May God bless you with beautiful memories.

  23. To my childhood neighbors and Gladys,
So sorry to hear of Jim passing. I couldn’t even bear to hear that he was in the Home. What a cool man he was! One of my favorite memories of Jim was listening to him whistle while he sauntered over to the house to put me out of pain from a fall. He was always so calm, cool and collected as he chewed his clove gum. (And yes we knew it was hidden in the back of the coat closet in the dining room.) One of my other memories of Jim was his kindness to me as I walked in my sleep one night very late to see if Julie could come out and play. I believe he assisted me back home. Just so many more, we really did have a magical childhood, with many memories of Green Lake, Lake Louise and Cottonwood. I’ve been thinking of you for the past several days and hope that you are celebrating his life, it was an amazing one! Love to all of you, I miss you!

  24. I would like to offer my deepest sympathies to you. I am so sorry for your loss. Please know that you are never alone. Turn to the Holy Scriptures for guidance and to help soothe your heart. Psalms 34:18 assures us that God is near to those broken at heart and crushed in spirit. Please accept my deepest sympathies.
