September 28, 1942 ~ March 22, 2010

Duane Leonard Mullaney, 67, of Polo, passed away Monday, March 22, 2010 at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 27, 2010 at St. Liborius Catholic Church, Polo with Father Chester Murtha officiating. Burial followed at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Polo. Visitation was held from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., Friday, March 26, 2010 at Reck Funeral Home, Miller with a 7:00 p.m. wake service at the church.

Duane was born September 28, 1942 in Miller to Leonard and Leona (Naber) Mullaney as the second of four children. His siblings included a sister Phyllis and brothers Gerald and Marvin.

He lived his whole life in the Polo area attending St. Liborius grade school and Fairview High School. He was as a lifetime member of Polo’s St. Liborius Church and the Knights of Columbus.

Duane worked on various farms in the area before going to work with his uncle Clarence Naber southeast of Polo in 1961.

In 1963 he married Cecilia (Venjohn) and had three children, Sheila, Rob and Doug.

He took over the farm in 1983 and was eventually joined by his daughter Sheila and husband Rob, and son Rob and wife Sandra in the farming operation.

Duane enjoyed the many aspects of the farming and ranching life and took great pride in the Angus cattle he raised.

A debilitating form of arthritis prevented him from physically participating in much of the farm work in the last 20 years, but he could be found almost daily checking fields and cows in his pickup.

Privileged to have shared his life are his children: Sheila (Rob) Schlechter, Miller, Rob (Sandra) Mullaney, Polo and Doug (Chris) Mullaney, San Tan Valley, AZ; grandchildren: Brandi (Jeff) Umberger, Kayla Schlechter, Casey Schlechter, Chelsey Schlechter, Brooke Mullaney, Tierney Mullaney, Riley Mullaney, Henry Mullaney, Ally Mullaney, and Kiernan Mullaney; his sister, Phyllis (Duane) Jurrens, Cheyenne, WY, and brothers Gerald Mullaney, Orient and Marvin (Mary) Mullaney, Crete, NE.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Maxine; and sister-in-law, Margaret Mullaney.

Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Duane's arrangements.

I enjoyed his sense of humor and joking with him. He will be missed.
