Earl L. Glodt, 81, lifelong resident of Gettysburg, passed away Thursday, December 27, 2007 at the Gettysburg Medical Center.
A memorial service was held at 2:00p.m., Sunday, December 30, at the United Methodist Church in Gettysburg with Rev. Mike Ward officiating. Burial was in the Gettysburg Cemetery, with military honors, under the direction of Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg.
Earl L. Glodt was born June 5, 1926, in Gettysburg, South Dakota, to Frank and Katherine (Jaeger) Glodt. He grew up and attended school in Gettysburg. Earl joined the United States Army in July, 1944, serving in Okinawa, the Philippines and Japan during World War II. A special honor for him was in Japan on July 4, 1946 when he was a member of the Salute Battery for General MacArthur. He was honorably discharged in August, 1946, at Fort Lewis, Wash.
Upon his return from the service, Earl went to work for the State of South Dakota Department of Transportation as a Highway Engineer, where he was employed for 42 years.
He was united in marriage on June 16, 1951, to Marian J. Holzwarth at the United Methodist Church in Gettysburg. To this union, five children were born: Cheryl, Alan, Jeff, Karla, and Kelly.
Earl was a member of the United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of both the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was active in the color guard since 1947, proudly leading many parades bearing the American Flag. He served as a city councilman and was a past commander of the American Legion.
Left to cherish Earl’s life is his wife: Marian of Gettysburg; children: Cheryl (Gary) Jongeling of Watertown, SD, Alan (Betty) Glodt of Saudi Arabia, Jeff (Judy) Glodt of Englewood, CO, Karla (Steve) Walker of New Brighton, MN and Kelly (Sue) Glodt of Pierre SD; grandchildren: Tyler Jongeling, Darci (Dan) Jongeling Ross, Jason (Michelle) Glodt, Kari (Clark) Glodt Johnson, J.T. (Rachel) Tolve, Jenni (Jeff) Tolve LeFree, Grace Walker, Josiah Walker, Sammy “Mas” Walker, Kyle Glodt, and Heather Glodt; great grandchildren: Carson “Little Earl” Glodt, Audrey and Grant Johnson, Antonia, Tyler, Brenden, and Jamey Tolve, and Taylor “Jo”, Attisen “Mo”, and Evalin “Bo” LeFree; two sisters: Alice (Clayton) Harker of Alturas, CA, and Violet (Marvin) Werth of Boise, Idaho.
He was preceded in death by his father on September 11, 1931, his mother on August 4, 1976, seven brothers: Frank, Leo, Raymond, Roy, George, Francis and Edward, and two sisters: Iline Kuvaas and Lucille Schutterle.
Earl was an avid armchair sports fan, enjoying Nascar, baseball, tennis, and football. He was also an accomplished bowler and hunter. Earl loved to play cards, especially cribbage, pinochle, whist and pitch. He was very proud of his family and loved to brag of their accomplishments (occasionally stretching reality a bit). He rarely missed a sporting event, concert, or play that involved one of his children or grandchildren. He was known for his many “Earlisms” and was a consummate teaser, much to the chagrin of his grandchildren.
He will be greatly missed by family, friends and all who knew him.

For years…Earl was a regular at the Firehouse Lounge with the 6 day a week @ 10:00AM & 3:00PM Fireflies coffee group. We will miss him since we enjoyed his company and he enjoyed ours too. God bless him and our prayers and concerns for his family.
Sorry to hear of your loss – especially at this time of year.
Winifred Fawcett & Anita Lowary
I just wanted to express my sympathies to the family. I will always remember the many experiences and lessons learned while working summers with Earl on the highway department. I feel very fortunate to have had those oppurtunities and will always be grateful to him for not killing me when I didn’t get the lid on the big yellow paint bucket and we ended up with paint all over the back of his van:) That was a cleanup I didn’t enjoy much but he remained calm and forgiving as always.
I’m sorry to hear of the passing of Earl. I had the great opportunity to meet Earl in 1970’s when I lived with Sherry in Watertown, we’d go to Gettysburg.
My Sincere Sympathy to the family. It is very difficult to lose a “Loved One”…especially during Holiday time. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
My Deepest Sympathy, Valgene & Family
Sorry for your loss. Your family is in my prayers.
