Edna Hanson, 97, of Faulkton, died Monday, October 30, 2006 at the Faulkton Healthcare Center.
Mass of Christian Burial was 10:30a.m. Thursday, November 2, 2006 at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Faulkton with Father Joji Itukulapati officiating. Burial was in St. Thomas Cemetery, Faulkton, directed by Luce Funeral Home, Faulkton. Visitation was 1:00-5:00p.m. Wednesday, November 1 at the funeral home with an 7:30p.m. prayer service at the church.
Edna was born February 10, 1909 to Milton and Pearl (O’Neil) Grimm at Burkmere, SD. Her elementary education was at Burkmere. She attended Notre Dame Academy in Mitchell for one year before transferring to Faulkton High School and graduated in 1927. She went to the college of St. Teresa, Winona, Minnesota for one year and then taught school for two years. On June 7, 1930, she married Tillman “Tim” Hanson of rural Seneca. They lived on several farms in the Seneca and Burkmere area before moving to Faulkton in 1956. Together, they had five children: Roger, Margaret “Peggy”, Eugene, Rockne, and Nels.
Through the years, Edna furthered her education from Northern Teacher’s College and returned to teaching, completing twenty-one years in the rural schools of Faulk County. After retiring, she did substitute teaching in the Faulkton School and also tutored some students during the summer months.
She was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, Altar Society, Catholic Daughters Court St. Monica #1436, North Central Area Retired Teacher’s Association, Faulkton Art Council, Historical Society, Autumn Leaves Senior Citizens Center, American Legion Auxiliary, V.F.W. Auxiliary, American Cancer Society, 4-H leader, and a twenty-three year member of John P. Shirk Advisory Board.
Grateful to have shared in her life are two sons: Eugene and Nels Hanson of Faulkton; daughter: Margaret “Peggy” (Don) Schiedel of Yankton; sister: Jean Sarako of San Diego, CA; daughter-in-laws: Beverly Hanson of Faulkton and Mildred Hanson of Fairbanks, AK; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Tim; sons: Roger and Rockne; daughter-in-law: Margaret Hanson; three sisters: Hazel Bartelle, Virginia Donahue, and Rebecca Kertzmann.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the Faulkton Hospital Foundation, GEO-Thermal Heating at St. Thomas Catholic Church, or the Faulkton School Building Fund.
