Edward Everett Howe, Jr. was born November 11, 1936 in Joe Creek to Edward Everett Howe, Sr. and Rose Marie (Sargeant) Howe. His Dakota name was Ohitika Hoksida “Solider Boy”. He was the eldest of nine brothers and sisters. Edward graduated from Riggs High School, Pierre, South Dakota in 1954, shortly after, he enlisted in the Marine Corps.

Edward Jr. then enlisted in the US Army. He traveled to various places and loved talking about all the places he visited during the war. After being honorably discharged from the Army in 1964 he married, Mary Pretty Weasel and to this union they had a son named, Everette Howe. Everette was an only child. Edward and his wife Mary moved to Cleveland, Ohio where they lived for thirteen years, soon after his son’s passing, he moved back to the West Bend area. He began work as an alcohol and drug counselor at Pierre Indian Learning Century in Pierre. During this time, he remained sober and was very proud of his sobriety.

He later met and married his wife, Bernice Shell Track-Howe in 1994. Edward Howe, Jr. spent the remainder of his life in the Harrold and Pierre area. He enjoyed taking polaroid pictures with everyone because “he wanted to always be remembered after he left”. He loved talking about the good ole days and always wondered how everyone was doing and if they were okay, especially Lucilla Adrian. He would often have long conversations after he would complete his dialysis.

Ed was particularly proud of his grandson, Daniel Howe, who is currently enlisted in the Marine Corps. Ed had many Marine Corps and Army accomplishments and he will be greatly missed.
