Edward P. Byhre, 70, of Highmore, passed away Sunday, January 4, 2015 at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital, Miller.
Funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, January 8, 2015 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Highmore with Pastor David Peterson officiating. Burial followed at the Highmore Cemetery. Visitation was one hour prior to the service at the church.
Edward Peter was born November 8, 1944 in Luverne, Minnesota to Edward and Anna (Nelson) Byhre. He attended and graduated from high school in Minnesota and Augustana College in Sioux Falls. While attending Augustana, he met his future bride, Susan Olson. They were married in 1966 in Sac City, Iowa. While working as a grad assistant in the basketball program at the University of South Dakota he earned a Masters in Physical Education.
Ed had a passion for education and coaching. His coaching took him to Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota and Eastern Kentucky. While at Eastern Kentucky University, he was the head coach of the boys basketball program, winning the OVC Conference and earning a spot into the NCAA tournament in 1979. Upon retiring from coaching, they moved back to the Midwest where Ed worked in education, establishing the Lower Brule Community College, working as a teacher and principal at Crow Creek, Shannon County and Pine Ridge; retiring in 2011. He respected his students and staff, and formed relationships that impacted his life and theirs.
While in South Dakota, he bred, raised, and trained quarter horses; concentrating on and preserving the Driftwood bloodline. He was a member of the AQHA since 1983.
He felt blessed to have 2 wonderful children and son-in-law, happiest when he could spend time with and tease his grandchildren, care for his dogs and horses, and show his loyalty to friends.
His memory will be cherished by his wife, Susan of Highmore; daughter, Jane (Matt) Grady of Washington, D.C.; grandchildren, Jack and Henry Grady; sisters, Becky (Glenn) Corcoran of Portland, OR and Jan (Pete) King of Norwalk, CT; brother, Steven (Carole) Byhre of Wisconsin; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
His parents and one son, Peter Byhre, preceded him in death.
Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Ed’s arrangements.

I WILL TRULY Miss my visits with Ed at the store. HE WAS ONE OF A KIND.
My deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Byhre. Ed.
As principal at Wolf Creek Mr. Byhre made a great impact on my son Skyler. Were it not for his genuine love and concern for the kids at the school, I’m not sure how I would have handled the situations that came up with my son.
I will forever remember Mr. Byhre for the positive role he played in my sons life.
From my son Skyler Poor Bear and my self-we offer our prayers for strength during these difficult times.
My sincere sympathy and prayers for you Susan.

Susan and Jane, You have truely lost a wonderful husband, father, Grandfather, and friend. I always enjoyed my visits with Ed. Being a teacher came out on the various subjects we would discuss. He was always relaxed in his rocking chair, coffee cup in hand and watching Susan to see what she was up to. He delivered some good soil additive for my vegtable garden. I will miss him. May God hold you in his hands during this time.
Praying, thinking and hugging you.

Susan, you and Jane have been on my mind continuously since I got your call. May God give you peace and strength. Ed will be missed. I wish we could be there with you but know that you are in our prayers.
hugs and prayers go out to Mrs. Bhyre and family. I had the privilege of working with and for Mr. Bhyre at Shannon County Schools. I owe a lot of my career decisions to him. His encouragement and positive criticism helped me become the educator that I am today. I admire and respect his wisdom, opinion, out look, humor, communication, leadership, and the relations that he has built not only with staff and students but with their families as well. Mr Byhre is not one to beat around the bush… he tells you how it is. He is a man of his word. He gives the job 110% and expects the same. Mr. B is the definition of old school ☺ I’m so thankful for all he has taught me and all the confidence he has given me. I just hope he knows how much I listened and worked to reach his high expectations. He will be missed greatly by countless… Love you Mr. & Mrs. B my heart is with you :'(
So sorry for your lose, really enjoyed working with Mr Byhre at Wolf Creek. Prayers for you during this time.
To the family of Ed Byhre, I am so sorry for your loss you all are in my thoughts and prayer. I was privileged to have him as a science teacher and a principal at Crow Creek. In the past few weeks I have thought about Ed, and ways to get in touch it saddens me to hear this news. I will say this Ed has been one of the inspirations in my life to do what I choose to do today and that is Teach, He genuinely cared about his students and it showed. He was a man with a big heart. Thank you ED for being a part of my journey. (Toksa Ake (see you soon)
We are saddened to learn of the passing of our friend, Ed. We worked with Ed at Pine Ridge and witnessed his ever present concern and love for the students that he worked with. There are many students here who knew Ed and they remember him as a kind man who took time to get to know them and that he wanted to help them to do better in life. We will miss, "Mr Bhyre" and we are sad that he is gone too soon. We wish to express our prayers and support to Mrs. Bhyre and the family in this time of sorrow and sadness. May God Bless all of you.

I’m sorry it took me so long to discover Coach Byhre had passed. My condolences to the family. I was on Ed’s basketball team (and in one of his classes) during his one year of teaching in Webster City Iowa. I’ll never forget how he opened his home to many of us just to hang out in some evenings (I seem to recall watching Monty Python there – interesting the things you remember). Ed made a difference to so many lives, I’m sure, and I take comfort in reading about all things and people who filled his life.
I want to express my condolences to Susan on the passing of Ed even though it’s been more than nine years since his passing. I just became aware of Ed’s passing as I was reminiscing to Facebook friends about Eastern Kentucky University’s men’s basketball team’s first conference championship in 45 years since Coach Ed Byhre led EKU to the NCAA Tournament. Coach Byhre was my friend and I had the opportunity to work with him to promote EKU basketball during his tenure as head coach. I am also saddened to learn about his son Peter’s death.
