Elaine Buechler, 94, of Seneca, passed away, Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at the Community Memorial Hospital, Redfield, SD.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at Luce Funeral Home, Faulkton with Deacon Arvid Holsing officiating. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service. Burial followed in the Oakland Cemetery, Seneca.

Elaine Leatha (Lower) Buechler was born on March 8, 1920 to Madison “Babe” and Amanda (Leipke) Lower in Seneca, SD. She was raised by her father and after her mother’s passing, her stepmother Doris Herring in Seneca. After Elaine graduated high school from Seneca, she went to Northern Normal in Aberdeen and obtained her teaching certificate.

On July 16, 1943 Elaine married William Buechler at the Lutheran Parsonage in Lebanon. Elaine and Bill had one son, Jerold. They farmed with Bill’s father for several years before buying their own farm 3.5 miles west of Seneca. In 1970, they sold their farm and moved into Seneca.

Elaine taught school for 50 years at various rural schools including Seneca and Tolstoy, and she ended her teaching career in Faulkton after spending 20 years there. Elaine loved to read, play cards, and drink coffee at the Senior Citizen Center in Seneca. Elaine was largely involved in the opening of the Senior Citizen Center as well as many other things in the community. She was a member of the VFWAuxiliary, the Legion Auxiliary, and the LWML for many years.

Elaine’s life will be cherished by her son, Jerold (Amy) Buechler of Warner; her grandchildren: Scott of Warner, Darcy of Minneapolis, MN, and Jeremy of Redfield; her nieces and nephews; and one future great-grandchild of Minneapolis, MN.

Elaine is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Buechler; and her siblings: Helen Nelson and Linden Lower.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Elaine’s arrangements.

    Sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. She and a number of other teacher kind of took me under their wing when I first started teaching in Faulkton they were "Other Mothers". Now they have all passed on. Our thoughts and prayers are with now and in the days to come.

  5. I remember fondly listening to the Seneca ladies playing cards, telling stories and laughing a lot. I enjoyed visiting Elaine when she lived in faulkton. Awesome teacher!
