Ellwood William Harold Brandenburg, 94, of Miller, passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller.

Memorial services were held at  2:00 p.m., Monday, March16, 2009 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Miller with Rev. Robert Ohnstad officiating. Burial will be in G.A.R. Cemetery, Miller at a later date.

Ellwood W. H. Brandenburg was born September 17, 1914, to Fred and Alma (Beug) Brandenburg in Alpena, South Dakota. He completed country school through the eighth grade. It was at this age, Ellwood took on many responsibilities for the family farm due to a serious accident involving his father.

On May 29, 1941, Ellwood married Margaret Frye at the American Lutheran Church in Huron, South Dakota. The young couple continued to farm alongside Ellwood’s parents near Lane, adding the joy of two children: Larry Paul and Pamela Anne. In 1958, they moved their family to a ranch they owned and operated south of St. Lawrence, South Dakota. Ellwood also operated a hay moving business and later grinding business from the ranch.

Retiring from ranching in 1978, Ellwood and Margaret built a new home north of Miller where he resided until moving to the Prairie Center Assisted Living in the spring of 2008.

Ellwood’s love for visiting with people will be remembered most. His quick greetings of “Hey, boy!” and “Hello, little girl!” were an open invitation to sit and talk awhile. He also enjoyed sharing a story or two about the newest group of pictures he had taken of friends, family and farm related subjects.

He is survived by his daughter, Pamela (Terry) Sievers of Miller and his son, Larry (Wendie) Brandenburg of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; six grandchildren: Rick, Kirk (Jill), and Morgan Brandenburg, Andrew Keehler, Lynn (Kevin) Watts and Branden (Delaina) Sievers; seven great grandchildren: Marcus (Cigi), Rachael, and Heather Brandenburg, Alexis and Nathan Watts, and Ryan and Dylan Sievers; and two great-great grandchildren: Kayleana and Brenen Brandenburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and two sisters: Leona and Arbutus.

Guestbook

  1. Pam, Terry, Lynn, Brandon & families,

So sorry to hear of the passing of your dad and “grandpa”. We always enjoyed Elwood’s smile and pleasant demeanor. I will miss seeing him at coffee at Heartstrings. Take care and may God bless you all during this sad time.

    Sincerely, Melvin & Debbie

  2. I will miss my pal. Ellwood would stop in to visit every time he was in the courthouse. He would fill me in on how it was to get old. He always made me smile.

  3. Bud,April, Stony and Marty says:

We are so sorry to learn of Elwood passing. He was a fun guy to be around and he and Dad really enjoyed spending time together. “two peas in a pod” We won’t be able to get to the funeral, but wanted you to know we are thinking of you and the family.

  4. I remember when I became part of the Stobbs family and Elwood and Marge were friends of Dorothy and Ed. I feel that I have known Elwood for many many years. The one thing he told me was the love he had for his family and how he worried about them a lot. When he came to Heartstrings, we would have many conversations about all kinds of topics. Even when I visited at the Assisted Living I would sit at his table and we’d have a good visit. He loved to visit. He was the folder of the ivy tissue paper for a number of years at Heartstrings and I wonder how many stacks he did. To his family– a legacy of the Brandenbury family has now gone. God Bless you as you share his memories.

  5. Larry,
I just wanted you to know I am thinking about you and your loss. I did not know your dad but heard so many good things about him. You and your family are in my prayers.
    Mike

  6. Lynn phoned me with sad new of Grandpa B’s passing. Thoughts of him sprinkle through my mind and I am all smiles. I was hoping to be able to post a picture of him on our last trip back to Miller. He was a special “Grandpa” to me! I will miss him.
