Elroy Baker was born on March 11, 1933 in Hereford, SD to Floyd and Roxanne (Mobley) Baker. He attended elementary school in Hereford until the 8th grade when his father became too ill to work. Elroy then began his working career on the family farm.
Elroy served his family as well as several other ranchers in the area in addition to working in the construction industry until he was drafted into the Army in 1955. He served honorably for his country, including 13 months of service in Japan following WWII. He was honorably discharged from the service in 1961.
Elroy was married to Frankie Ferguson on December 1, 1957 in Union Center, SD. He worked at Union Center Cooperative until 1963 when he took a managing position with Farmers Union Cooperative in Wecota, SD. He managed the Coop in Wecota for 23 years during which time he received many Sparkle Awards and loved his work. He retired from the Coop and started his family owned business, Baker’s Spraying Service in 1985. He actively managed, worked, and maintained the business until October of this past year when he became too ill to continue in his current capacity and turned it over to his son, Clyde. He continued to work with the business until his death.
Elroy’s hobbies included spending time with his family, gardening, watching his grandchildren play sports, working, and being with his dog. He was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Wecota as well as the American Legion of Faulkton.
He is survived by his wife Frankie; their three children: Clyde (Traci) Baker of Faulkton, Twila (Gary) Rausch of Onaka, and Darcy (Greg) Swier of Crooks; as well as ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and his brother Raymond (Mary) Baker of Hereford, SD.
