Florence Amelia Lightfield was born August 2, 1938 to Ernie and Ludmily (Docekal) Lightfield in Dupree, SD. Florence spent her early years living on the farm. She attended her first five years of school at the Cloverleaf Rural School in Ziebach County. She attended sixth grade at Red Elm School, where her sister Cora was the teacher. This was a special year as her brother Ernie was working and living in Red Elm at the same time. These siblings almost made up one half of the town’s population. Florence finished the remainder of her education in Dupree, graduating in May 1956. She went on to attend the National School of Business in Rapid City and finished her stenographer training in November of 1957.
In January 1958, Florence started working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Aberdeen, transferring to Cheyenne River Agency in December 1958.
On January 1, 1959, Florence married Norman Schuler. From this union, Norman Ray, Jacob, Lily and Donald were born. Florence’s job moved to Eagle Butte in the fall of 1959 and she retired in September 1986. After her retirement she worked at several jobs in the area of Eagle Butte.
In 1975, Florence and her three sons took the emergency medical technician training. She worked with the Teton Ambulance Service for approximately 18 years. She was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Eagle Butte, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans where she helped with several fundraisers, and has been a member of the Women’s Missionary Federation at her church.
After Norman’s death in 2009, Florence had a bad stroke and was unable to live alone any longer. She moved into Lily and John’s home. There she helped Lily with daycare and loved all the kids, read stories, wiped noses and got lots of hugs. She had to overcome several health issues but never gave up.
Florence enjoyed reading, scrapbooking, sewing and spending time with family and friends. She especially enjoyed her time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by her children: Norman R. (Shelly) Schuler of Eagle Butte, Grandchildren: Barb and Andrew and great grandson, Bradley; Jake (Cindy) Schuler of Belle Fourche, Grandchildren: Kyle, Joy, Hope and Jim; Lily (John) Bachman of Eagle Butte, Grandchildren: Crystal (Shannon) Anderson, April (Riley) Anderson, Julia (Michael) Pugh and Karmela and great grandchildren: Skye, Freya, McCormick, Reagan, Aurora, Zachary, and Sadie; and Donnie (Michelle) Schuler of Hallock, MN, Grandchildren: Robbie, Nikki (fiancée, Marcus Steien) and Devan (fiancée, Courtney Murphy) and great grandson: Romeo; sister, Cora Jefferies of Fort Pierre; brother, Bill (Wanda) Lightfield of Waubay; sisters-in-law: Vi Lightfield of Brookings and Ardith Lightfield of Middle Town, MD.

Florence gave me hugs when I needed them, her and Norman felt like family. Working with them at the Teton Ambulance Service was amazing. The laughter shared among us helped us cope with the calls we responded to. Thank you Florence for being a wonderful and loving role model.
I am deeply sorry for your loss. May Gods’ loving kindness bring comfort and strength to you during this very difficult time. 2Co 1:3, 4

To the Schuler Family, so sorry to hear that Florence passed away; saddened, but she is in Heaven having a blast. Can you imagine meeting up with her husband, our grandmas and grandpas, parents – I can hear it – and it is loud!! Maybe a little music in the background. You are blessed to have been able to care for her.
A beloved member of the church and community! Love to your family
My condolences to the Schuler family.
