Francis Hale, 80, of Highmore, passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2008 as a result of an automobile accident in Highmore.

Funeral services were 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 19, 2008 at the Church of Christ, Highmore, with Max Kelley officiating. Burial was in the Highmore Cemetery, directed by Luze Funeral Home of Highmore. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Francis Robert, youngest son of William and Marie (McCurdy) Hale was born August 8, 1927 in Highmore. At the age of four, while attending Sunday school in Dewey Township in a country school, Francis was baptized. As a young child he suffered from a heart condition and was given doctors orders to stay in bed for several weeks. In 1946, he graduated from Highmore High School. After high school, he returned to the farm in Dewey Township where the strong Hale family work ethic was very evident.

He loved to share his memories of helping neighbors through the years. With his mother in the nursing home in Highmore and his brother Frederick passing away in 1976, he began fixing tractors for his friends from Faulkton to Chamberlain and Blunt to Miller which he enjoyed and took great pride in doing.

Moving into Highmore in 1996 was a very difficult adjustment for Francis. Playing cards and visiting with friends at the Thunderbird helped occupy his time. In the last year, he especially enjoyed having coffee with his friends at Main Street Café.

Francis is survived by his sister-in-law, Elaine Hamlin-Hale (Les) Ashdown of Highmore; niece, Peggy (Craig) Fausett of Highmore; nephews, Patrick of Highmore, Allan of Tripp, Robert (Lesley) Hale of Yankton, and their families; and two half nephews, Jay Runestad and John Runestad and two half nieces, Alma Lucas and Maxine Wilson and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, a half brother and two half sisters.

Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Francis’s arrangements.
