Frederick C. Soule, 98, of Gettysburg, passed away Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at Gettysburg Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 3, 2011 at Christ Episcopal Church in Gettysburg. Burial was held January 4, 2011 at the Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis. .A prayer service, with Masonic and Eastern Star Rites, was held at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, January 2, 2011 at the church.

Frederick Charles Soule was born at Stratton, Cirencester, Gloucestershire England on December 30, 1911 to Charles Henry and Elizabeth Louise (Smith) Soule. He received his education at Stratton School and Cirencester Grammar School. At the age of 19 Freddie emigrated to America, where he lived with his uncle and family for ten years. He became an American citizen at Forsyth, Montana in 1936.  In 1939, he moved to Aberdeen, where he was employed with the Nash Finch Co.

On December 7, 1941 Freddie enlisted with the United States Navy. He served in the South Pacific Theater on the Sub chaser 724 as a signalman. Upon his return to the US in 1944, he was stationed at the Signal Tower in San Diego as a supervisor until his discharge.

Freddie married Dorothy Kezar on May 25, 1945. Together they resided in Miles City for a few years before returning to Aberdeen and later moving to Whitlock’s Crossing where they owned a store and raised their family of three girls, Elizabeth, Margaret and Dorothy.  After 10 years at the Crossing, the family moved to Gettysburg due to the building of the Oahe Dam and the filling of the Oahe Reservoir.  Freddie worked for the Post Office as a Rural Mail Carrier for the next 20 years, delivering mail to the nicest people and enjoying every day of service.

 Freddie was appointed Ambassador for the State of South Dakota by Governor Bill Janklow in 1981.  He also served on the Gettysburg School Board for 14 years, was a member of the VFW, member and past commander of the American Legion, member and past Master of the Ionic Lodge, member and past Patron of the Eastern Star, member of Scottish Rite and Yelduz Shrine, past president of the Yelduz Shrine, member of the Episcopal Church where he was a Lay Reader and served in many other positions, and a member and past president of the Gettysburg Country Club.  Freddie was an avid golfer and had many friends who shared his love for the game.

Freddie is survived by his daughters: Elizabeth (Wes) Agar of Bellevue, NE, Margaret (Dan) Bouzek of Reno, NV and Dorothy (Alex) Sundberg of Stayton, OR; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren and three sisters living in England: Enid Miller, Margaret Jefferies and Lillian McTighe. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy; one grandson, Jonathan; one brother, Herbert and four sisters, Queen, Kay, Joan and Dorothy.  

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Freddie’s arrangements.
