Gary McCloud, 63, of Hoven passed away Tuesday, February 04, 2014 in Hoven.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, February 8, 2014 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Hoven with Father Kevin Doyle officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.  Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, February 7, 2014 with a 7:00 p.m. wake service at the church.

Gary was born August 18, 1950 to John and Eva “Suzie” (Axtman) McCloud in Faulkton, SD.  He spent his younger years on the farm until his father’s death in 1958.  They then moved to Faulkton where he attended elementary school.  At the age of eleven, his mother married Norman Leach and they moved to Lebanon, SD where he attended Copp School.

After high school, Gary started working various jobs from feed mills to farming to running his own corn picking business in Gettysburg. Auctioneering was his passion, which led him to World Wide College of Auctioneering in 1974, where he received his degree in auctioneering.  He, along with Rich Penrod, then started McCloud & Penrod Auction Company in 1975.  They auctioned together until 2010, when Gary went into business with his son, Sam, and his son-in-law, Lewis, forming M&R Auctions.  He also auctioned at Highmore Auction Barn. After the Highmore barn closed, he auctioned for a brief time at Gettysburg Livestock, Ft. Pierre Livestock, Herreid Livestock, and Linton, ND.  In 1973 he went to work for Don Siebrasse as a farmhand until 2000.  After that, he went to work for Hollis Helgeson’s Triple H Farms of Hoven until 2008 when he began haying on his own, helping local farmers, and continuing to auctioneer.

In December 1984, he was married to Cindy (Brenner) of Hoven and they started their lives together seven miles south of Lebanon, where they raised their five children.  In 1998, they moved to their current home in Hoven.

Gary had a love for all animals, especially his beloved dogs Pepper and Casey, but not as great as the love he had for his six grandchildren Matt McCloud, Kaden and Jaycee Reuer, Jocelyn and Lennox Rumpca, and Mya McCloud.

He was a member of the South Dakota Auctioneers Association and the National Auctioneers Association. He enjoyed dedicating his time to surrounding communities’ local events; Gary announced many events including 4-H, FFA, and parades. He also enjoyed his mountain oyster feeds “swinging sirloin”, playing cards, and collecting Case IH tractors, toys and antiques.

Gary is survived by his wife of 29 years Cindy; two sons: Shane (Tricia) McCloud of Doland and Sam McCloud of Lake Area Tech; three daughters: Katrina (Lewis) Reuer of Bowdle, Chelsy (Tyler) Rumpca of Webster, and Amanda McCloud of Lake Area Tech; brothers: Speed (Pat) McCloud of Highmore, Stanley (Jeanette) McCloud of Faulkton, Wade (Doris) McCloud of Wichita Falls, TX, Dick (Sandy) McCloud of Amery, WI,  and Lee McCloud of Wichita Falls, TX; one sister: Shirley Bounds of Wichita Falls, TX; one sister-in-law, Zoa McCloud of Scotts Bluff, NE numerous nieces and nephews, and his six grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his father; mother; step father; one sister, Evelyn Shields; two brothers: Jerry and Jack; one sister-in-law Gerri; one brother-in-law, Bob Bounds and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Roman and Carolyn Brenner.
