Gene Ernest Herman came into this world on May 11, 1940, the first child born to Ralph and Nina (Reed) Herman on their farm in Saratoga Township of Faulk County. He attended primary school in a nearby one-room rural schoolhouse, followed by high school in Faulkton and finally college at SDSU. He returned from college and resumed farming with his father until he purchased the farm and continued on his own. He farmed until health problems forced him into a less active role, although he remained involved in farming the rest of his life.
Gene was a lifelong bachelor, and while he raised no family of his own, he was very family oriented and took an active interest in the extended families of his brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He traveled extensively, often to participate in the significant events in the lives of his family and friends. Gene spent many winters in the southwest and developed lasting relationships there with people throughout the Midwest and Canada with whom he visited and kept in touch. He loved pheasant season when he could entertain hunters to his farm, both relatives and friends, and while he was a private man, he was also a good listener and confidant. Gene loved bringing people together; he liked most people and most people liked him.
Gene was a member of the United Church of Faulkton, the Autumn Leaves Senior Center, the Odd Fellows Lodge and the Rebekah Lodge. He enjoyed spending time visiting people, playing games with friends, gardening, adding to his many collections and reading western paperbacks.
Gene is survived by his mother Nina of Faulkton; sister, Cherry (Eugene) Frasier of Faulkton, their children, Tannia (Kevin), Fargo, ND; Darla (Dave) Eichstadt, Huron, SD; Dale (Karen) Frasier, Spearfish, SD; Jayme (Amie) Frasier, Faulkton; sister Marlys’ daughter, Trisha Meek and her son John Meek and daughter Marina Kader, Faulkton; brother, Gale (Holly) Herman, of Monticello, MN and their daughters Jessica (Adam) Schmidt, Winthrop, MN; Colleen (Grant) Johnson, St. Michael, MN; Margaret (Ryan) Denzer, Denver, CO; brother, Glen Herman of Olathe, KS, and his daughters Alicia (Robert) Terry, Overland Park, KS, Tara (Andrew) Springer, Overland Park, KS; son Jerod Herman, Olathe, KS and many more grandnieces and grandnephews, plus his goddaughter, Brenda (Coen) Bloyd, Burlington, CO; Eric Remily with son Levi and daughter Caitlyn, Fargo, ND, were also special friends of Gene’s whom he closely held as part of his family.
He is preceded in death by his father Ralph and his sister Marlys (Spade) Cooley.
He will be sorely missed by all of those who knew and loved him. Godspeed, Gene.
In lieu of flowers, memorials should go to the Autumn Leaves Senior Citizen Center of Faulkton.
