Genevieve Marso, 95, of Harrold, was taken to her Heavenly home on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at Kelly’s Assisted Living Center in Pierre.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 14, 2014 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Harrold with Father Chester Murtha, celebrant. Burial followed at St. John’s Cemetery, Harrold. Visitation began at 6:00 p.m., Sunday, July 13, 2014 followed by a 7:00 p.m. wake service, all at the church.
Genevieve was born at Parkston, South Dakota on November 18, 1918 to Henry and Mary (Boehmer) Stauble. Her family moved to Harrold when she was two years old and she graduated from Harrold High School in 1937. After graduation, she worked in the Harrold Post Office, Gamble Store, and grocery store until 1941. She then moved to Pierre and worked at the Pierre Fruit Store until she met and married Arthur Marso on February 7, 1945. To this union, three sons were born. Art and Gen purchased the Cash and Carry Store in Harrold in 1949 and operated it until 1953. In 1968, Gen went to work for the State of South Dakota in the Livestock Sanitary Board Department for the next 13 years. Art suffered a stroke and Gen then stayed at home to care for him for the next five years before he passed. Art and Gen moved into the Harrold Apartment Building in 1985; this was Gen’s home for the past 29 years until she moved to Kelly’s Retirement Center this past month.
Genevieve’s past time for the span of her lifetime was crocheting and saving any and all newspaper articles pertaining to her beloved Harrold family and friends. She also kept documentation of all her handicrafts and one piece of paper that was found stated, “I crocheted six bedspreads, 41 tablecloths, 115 afghans and 964 doilies.” When her fingers could no longer handle the needles, she started putting puzzles together – another skill she became very accomplished at and loved to do to pass the time. She also loved to bake – even to the end.
She is survived by her sons, Dennis (Marlene) Marso of Harrold and Larry (Joan) Marso of Marion; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one sister, Delores Krein of Erie, PA; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arthur; son, James; sister, Henrietta; and two brothers, Virgil and Sylvester.

My deepest sympathy goes out to the family of Gen. We were next door neighbors and close friends. Gen always had a smile. Her crocheting, gardens and chickens were her pride and joy. Dennis, Jim and Larry were very good friends of mine. Remember the good times and know that she is with you always.
