Gladys Hapney
July 22, 1914 ~ July 16, 2009
Gladys Hapney, 94, of Harrold, passed away Thursday, July 16, 2009 at the Highmore Healthcare Center.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at the United Methodist Church, Harrold with Pastor Mary Ann Sheldon officiating. Burial followed in Medicine Hill Cemetery, Harrold. Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 21, 2009 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at Luze Funeral Home in Highmore.
Gladys, the youngest of eleven children, was born on July 22, 1914, in Spencer, South Dakota to Henry and Delta (Nopens) Murray. Gladys attended school in Spencer until the family moved north of Highmore in 1928 where she graduated from Highmore High School. Gladys had six sisters: Amy Duncan, Hazel Murray, Florence Radensleben, Pearl Rickgauer, Emma Fife and Mable Berreth; and four brothers, Chuck, Albert, Oliver and Clarence.
On September 21, 1933, Gladys married Ray Ira Hapney at the Methodist Church in Pierre, South Dakota. Following their marriage, they farmed south of Highmore. One daughter and two sons were born to this union. In 1940, they moved to a homestead south of Harrold. They all lived in a one room shack for several months before building a two room house on the basement that they dug themselves and where they would eventually build their home. Prior to Ray’s death in March of 1978, they enjoyed square dancing, visiting with neighbors, and taking their yearly vacations to visit their respective relatives.
Gladys was an active member of the R-Doing Club, the United Methodist Women’s group and the Harrold Senior Center. Gladys was most active, however, in the lives of her family. She sewed and mended for her grandchildren and their families as well as making baby quilts for each and every great grandchild and great-great grandchild. She enjoyed her card games and her romance novels and she played many games of ball in her front yard with her great grandchildren. Whatever they wanted to play, she would play. She will be greatly missed.
Her memory will be cherished by her daughter: Mildred (Raymond) Salathe of Harrold; and two sons: George (Arliss) Hapney of Harrold and Everett Hapney of Hot Springs; eight grandchildren; twenty five great grandchildren; twenty eight great-great grandchildren, one great great-great grandchild; four great-great grandchildren on the way; and one sister: Mable Berreth of Aberdeen.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ray; five sisters and four brothers.
Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Gladys' arrangements.

Our sincere sympathies to the family of Gladys. I enjoyed visits with her at the nursing home. I will miss seeing her there.
Sincerely,
Linda D.
Aunt Gladys always had a smile on her face. She was a very special lady and I only wish I could have lived closer to be with her more. I have a lot of special childhood memories of family reunions and time at the farm. I was planning on seeing her the next week after she died. I am sad I wasn’t able to have that time. I pray special comfort and blessings for the family at this sad but celebrating time. Love, Flora
