Grant Bates, 77, of Miller, died Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Center in Miller. No services will be held.
Grant Thomas Bates was born July 30, 1935 to Harold and Leona (Siebrecht) Bates at Webster, SD. He grew up and attended school in Webster graduating from high school in 1953. After high school Grant joined the U.S. Army and served at Fort Lewis and Yakima, Washington. Graduating from Northern State College with a teaching degree, Grant taught mathematics and science in Wessington, Barnard, Philip and Harrold, SD. A brain tumor operation precluded his teaching career.
Grant moved to Raymond, Washington to be with family where he opened a successful salvage business. He operated the business until he returned to Miller as a resident of the Good Samaritan Center.
Survivors include 4 brothers, Gary (Barb) Bates of Miller, Morris (Pat) Bates of Homer, NE, Maurice (Roberta) Bates of Ashville, NC, Charles (Georgia) Bates of Puyallup, WA; one sister Emma (Jack) Holm of Eagan, MN; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Patty, and brother George (Connie).
