Gregory James Simon was born on March 10, 1949 in Hoven, South Dakota at the Holy Infant Hospital. He was the oldest of four children born to Marvin and Elvina (Knecht) Simon. As a child, he grew up on a farm west of Lebanon, SD. He attended grade school in Lebanon and graduated from Hoven High School in 1967. He went on to receive his secondary education degree in Industrial Arts from Northern State College, Aberdeen, in 1971. While in college, he met his future wife, Sharon J. Morgan, as the result of a missing button on a shirt in the college bowling alley. They got married June 20, 1970 in Rapid City, SD. In the fall of 1971, Gregg and Sharon started their teaching careers with the Mobridge School system. Along with his teaching career, Gregg ran a gunsmithing shop, and had a fishing tackle business which included a fishing guide service. The highlight of his teaching career was the establishment of the Industrial Arts program.

Anyone who knew Gregg, knows an obituary cannot possibly encompass who he was. His personality, his lifelong impact on others and his infectious laugh got the attention of all who met him. Across many generations, he imparted his lasting impressions of the importance to ‘pay attention to detail’, ‘focus on the goal’ and to have a ‘strive to do your very best’ demeanor. Gregg always stood up for the “little guy” and was the first to encourage you when things were down and out. His pride in those he loved, often revealed the tender side of a man who wished he could always do more. You would be hard pressed to call Gregg Simon anything other than a “man’s man”, a man of integrity and one who respect was easy to give to.

Given the opportunity, Gregg’s humor and banter was shared with everyone he interacted with. The ability to find joy in each day was not often a problem. Gregg enjoyed and took pride in taking care of things placed in his care whether it was people or material things. Although he could find joy in every-day life, Gregg added to that with a love for competitive shooting sports, hunting, fishing, cooking and “Simonizing” anything he could get his hands on! Over the years he participated in American Trapshooting locally and at the state level, National Rifle Association Indoor Pistol shooting, and most recently was very active in shooting a Shiloh Sharps 1874 single shot black powder cartridge rifle. With shooting the Sharps came much travel for competitive matches in North Dakota, Montana, Nebraska and South Dakota. Last year he participated in a national match in Raton, New Mexico. Many hours were invested in perfecting each aspect of his shooting career.

Although Gregg’s hobbies occupied much of his time, he loved nothing more than to make memories with his family. The pride and joy of Gregg’s life was sharing his life with his wife, Sharon J. (Morgan) Simon, children Shane (Sean) Simon, daughter Temple Simon, Nemo, SD; Brent (Jackie) Simon, daughters Mya, Kaylee, and Emilee Simon, Rapid City, SD; Tashina (Enoch) Pashby, sons Hunter and Gage Frerichs, step- daughter, Tenley Pashby, Box Elder, SD. He is also survived by his siblings: Rick (Imelda) Simon, Gettysburg, Sharon (Mark) Mulder, Sioux Falls, and Tim (Sandy) Simon, Webster; brothers-in-law: Steve (Pat) Morgan, Rapid City and Kevin (Angela) Morgan, Spearfish; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.

Gregg is preceded in death by his parents: Marvin (2010) and Elvina (2016); mother and father-in-law: Bob (2000) and Leola (2009) Morgan.

  5. John and Darlene Simon Haffner says:

Dear Sharon and Family, Such a shock, what can one say at a time like this. I am so grateful for the family reunion and the fun we all had. I will forever remember Gregg’s laugh and the rides on the tractor. We always had a good laugh over that, you know the city kid goes to the farm. Loved the farm the family and so proud to be a Simon. All my love and prayers to you and the family at this most difficult time. Sincere sorrow and tears. Love, Darlene

  6. My condolences to all of the Simon family. I can only say he was a great friend, and he will be so very sorely missed. May God be with you and bless you.

  7. My sincere condolences. Mr. Simon was one of my favorite teachers at MHS. I had the privilege of introducing my wife and children to him one afternoon at the gun range out side Mobridge . Greg was one of the few teachers that I could relate to as punk kid . He always had a word of wisdom to give me and I lioved his laughter because it made me laugh too. God Bless

  8. Our deepest sympathy to Sharon and all the Family. This has been such a shock to us. May your beautiful family provide consolation and support. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sharon and Gregg and the family. Love, Mel

  9. Gregg was passionate about everything he did. His teaching was no exception. When a project, an assignment, or a process passed his rigorous inspection (precise and with few if any flaws), it was said to be "Simonized". To have one’s work "Simonized" was an honor. He marched to his own drummer and respected all who earned it. He was generous with praise and help when it was needed or deserved. Will miss his hearty laugh and great smile. While we did "lock horns" on occasion, I’m glad Gregg was a colleague of mine. I learned from him.

  10. My deepest condolences to Sharon and the family. I was so surprised to hear the news as Mr. Simon was so full of life. He was a very loving, caring, and funny man. Almost every morning for the past year & a half, I got to joke around with him when he came to get his breakfast. His sense of humor is one unlike any others and knew how to make someone’s day that much better. In the short time I knew him, he was such a great man, one of a kind. He will truly be missed by many people. RIP Gregg Simon

  11. Got to know Gregg thru the Police Station in Mobridge when he came a chewed the fat with the Law Enforcement Officers When all would tell stories and all felt very good at that moment. I’m sure everyone will miss his laugh etc…. May Gregg RIP and now is in the Lords Kingdom for another angel entered. God Bless the Family and my deepest Sympathy.

  12. Mr. Simon was a great teacher, and although it was many many years ago, I still have some great memories of his Tech classes and the adventures we had there. He was always friendly, sometimes with a little good natured grumpiness. You could always ask him a question and get a straight and detailed answer. To this day when I put papers in a three tab folder, I remember him getting on us to not use the little tabs on the outside to close it!

  13. So very sorry to hear about Gregg, our thoughts and prayers are with you…..

  14. Sharon and family, my condolences to your loss…Gregg was my shop teacher in Mobridge High School. I always enjoyed his class and he treated all of his students with the greatest of respect…he will be missed…

  15. We were very sad to hear of Gregg’s untimely passing. We knew Gregg through competitive shooting sports. We enjoyed his competitive spirit and his sense of humor. Our deepest condolences to Sharon and family.

  16. Always enjoyed shooting and visiting with Gregg
