He, along with his parents, four sisters and two brothers, moved to Illinois Township, Hyde County, South Dakota in 1933. Harold received his education in Illinois Township School.

World War II came and he was called to serve. He entered the U.S. Army in April of 1942 and was stationed in California, South Carolina, and Mississippi before being sent to the European Theatre. There he was stationed in Africa and Italy before serving combat duty with the infantry through France, Germany and Austria. To this union, eight children were born: Mary, Linda, Shirley, Elmer, Gladys, Marilyn, Melvin and Thelma Jean. Harold farmed in Hyde County his entire life on the farm that was homesteaded by his grandparents.
