September 12, 1928 ~ December 2, 2014

Hattie O. Cherland, 86, of Highmore and formerly of Miller, passed away Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at the Highmore Health in Highmore.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 8, 2014 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Highmore with Pastor David Peterson officiating. Burial followed at the Highmore Cemetery. Visitation was held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., Sunday, December 7, 2014 with a 4:00 p.m. prayer service, all at Reck Funeral Home, Miller.

Hattie, the youngest of eight children, was born to Ole T. and Mary Ellen “Nellie” (Chapman) Cherland on September 12, 1928 at their home in north Hyde County, South Dakota. She was baptized, confirmed, and grew to adulthood attending Edwin and Sedgwick Lutheran Church and the one-room school in Illinois Township of Hyde County.

In 1964, Hattie moved to Miller where her first job was as a Nanny for the Garth Zeigler family. She became a "second Mom" to the Zeigler children. After the children were grown, she spent the remainder of her working years in grocery stores, the bowling alley, at Crossman’s, and at the Miller School library. Hattie loved bowling, so it was appropriate that she worked at Coral Lanes well into her retirement years.

Although Hattie never married or had children of her own, she "Mothered" many of her nieces and nephews. She often hosted sleep-overs, took them to car races and bowling (or just hanging out at the bowling alley). She made GREAT popcorn and Rice Krispies bars.

Hattie enjoyed life and having family and friends in her home was a large part of that. Every year, Hattie hosted the large Cherland family to Christmas Eve supper. It was always a festive event for everyone attending! She also enjoyed crocheting afghans and kitchen towels in her quiet times.

Hattie is survived by two sisters, Anna May Carlson of Annandale, MN and Alice Buchheim of Highmore, SD; the Zeigler children: Linda, Steve, Jean, Judy, and Ron; many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Tilden and John; and three sisters, Ellen Olson, Thelma Larson, and Hannah Morford.

Luze Funeral Home, Highmore and Reck Funeral Home, Miller have been entrusted with Hattie’s arrangements.
