Helen S. Schad, 93, of Eagle Butte passed away Friday, December 13, 2013 at her home in Eagle Butte.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. MST, Saturday, December 21, 2013 at the All Saints Catholic Church, Eagle Butte with Fr. Matthew Fallgren presiding. A rosary service will be at 7:00p .m. MST, Friday December 20, 2013 at the church with visitation one hour prior.

Helen Selma Anderson was born August 14, 1920 on the farm near Brandt, SD to Selmer and Cora (Stroschein) Anderson. She attended school at Pretty Creek School and Dupree High School. Helen continued her education by attending teachers training at Aberdeen Normal School. She started teaching in 1941 at Clover Leaf and Rogers School, where she met her husband. She received her teaching degree from Black Hills State College in 1971. On May 18, 1943 Helen was united in marriage to Donald A. Schad. Together they made their home on a farm five miles south of Lantry. From 1961, Helen taught at Eagle Butte, until her retirement in 1985.

Helen was a 60 year member of the Prairie Pride Extension Club, a member and secretary of the Eagle Butte Community Club, a member and treasurer of All Saints Catholic Church Altar Society, member and treasurer of Kensington Club and a member of Sacred Heart Altar Society. She enjoyed gardening, crafts, making quilts, and visiting with her friends and former students.

Helen is survived by her children: Coral (Boyd) Joens, Henry, SD, Melvin (Georgia) Schad, Sheridan, MI, Donald L. (Jill) Schad, Lead, SD, Roderick (Belva) Schad, Eagle Butte, and Neale (Kathy) Schad, San Antonio, TX; one daughter in law, Mrs. Sidney (Verna) Schad, Lantry; nine grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald A. Schad; one son, Sidney; and two grandchildren.

Memorials can be directed to All Saints Catholic Church, Eagle Butte.

Luce Funeral Chapel of Eagle Butte has been entrusted with Helen’s arrangements.

  1. I met Helen when I came to Eagle Butte to teach…she was still teaching at the time. I was the driver for her and others when we went to Pierre Players…prior to Nancy Zins. She was always smiling, kind and positive!
