Henrietta (Heezen) Shaw, fondly known as ?Sis? by her family and friends, passed away Saturday, February 4, 2012 in Miller at the age of 105. Sis?s funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 9 at the First Presbyterian Church in Miller with Rev. Brian Jones officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service all at Rembold Funeral Home. Burial will be at G.A.R. Cemetery in Miller.
Sis was born April 25, 1906 in Armour, SD to Benjamin and Hattie Heezen. At a very young age she moved with her family to South Hand County. She lived the rest of her life in South Hand County, except for the time she spent in Madison, SD obtaining her teaching degree.
On November 13, 1926, Sis married Edward Shaw. They had one son, Eugene. The couple bought a farm south of Ree Heights. Edward died in 1986, but Sis continued to live on the farm until the age of 94.
For 33 years, Sis was a dedicated teacher in Hand and Buffalo Counties. She cared deeply for her students, even walking to the rural schools in inclement weather ?Just in case some of the students might be there.? She was later rewarded when many of her students became friends and neighbors.
In 1993 Sis was nominated for the Spirit of Dakota award. Although she did not receive the award, she truly exemplified the ?spirit of Dakota?. She had a great fondness for South Dakota, often saying it was the best state in the country.
Sis loved playing cards, working crossword puzzles, watching Letterman on TV, and most of all having coffee and visiting with family and friends.
Sis is survived by her son Eugene (Mary) Shaw of Scobey, Montana; one grandson Tony Shaw of Millersburg, Pennsylvania; three great grandchildren, Rebecca (Daniel) Whitsel, Stacey (Alex) Batista, and Aaron Shaw; five great great grandchildren, Julianna and Ava Whitsel, Alexis, Genevieve and Mylie Batista; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and nine siblings and their spouses.
Sis will always be remembered for her quiet understanding and non judgmental ways.

I remember going to ‘Aunt’ Sis’s house trick or treating growing up. She always had the best popcorn balls and stories to share. She loved to talk about teaching my dad and is one of the reasons why I became a teacher myself. She always had a hug for us when we came and when we left. Truly an amazing woman and neighbor! She will be missed.
I will always cherish the moments with Aunt Sis. I enjoyed going over to her house with dad and mom just to visit. As my sister said, going trick or treating there was always fun. I will cherish all the memories she shared with us children growing up and all her wonderful hugs and smiles. What an incredible lady she was.
Sorry to hear of the passing of SiS. Can remember visiting them when going to visit Uncle Ray. Sorry we can’t make the funeral but our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.
