Iann S. Collins, age 83, of Spearfish, South Dakota, passed away Thursday, August 20, 2026, at Monument Health Hospice, Rapid City surrounded by the quiet strength and grace that defined her life.
A private burial will take place in the Faulkton Cemetery.
Iann Schreiner Collins, was born in 1943 at Faulk County Memorial Hospital, she grew up ten miles west of town on her family’s dairy farm, the youngest of four children. Her parents instilled simple but enduring values – be good and do good – principles she carried faithfully throughout her life.
A bright student, Iann attended Latham rural school, skipping the second grade, and graduated from Faulkton High School in 1960. Unsure of her path, she enrolled at Northwest College of Business in Huron, later beginning a long career in administrative and payroll work.
Iann married in 1967 and became the devoted mother of three sons. She worked steadily outside the home, serving utility companies, gold mines, and eventually spending twenty years working for Doug Lueder at Lueders Food Centers and his modular home dealership—handling payroll with her trademark reliability and precision.
Her greatest pride was her family. Her eldest son, Andrew, retired from the DEA and the Navy Reserves as an Admiral. His wife, Andrea, works at Rapid City Christian School; their daughter Lily will attend BHSU this fall, and their son Jack attends Central High School. Her second son, Nick, retired from the U.S. Forest Service after years supervising a Hotshot crew; he and his wife Becky share a love of the outdoors and their French Bulldog, Gin. Her youngest son, Joe, owns his own professional home inspection company near Seattle.
In 2021, Iann suffered a fall that led to a diagnosis of Primary Lateral Sclerosis. Though the disease gradually took her voice, it never dimmed her spirit. She embraced a quieter world with courage, positivity, and deep attentiveness, becoming – by her own words – “a great listener” to her wonderful friends at Saint Martin Village in Rapid City.
Iann is survived by her beloved sons, daughters‑in‑law, grandchildren, and extended family. She will be remembered for her resilience, her work ethic, her gentle humor, and her unwavering devotion to those she loved.

To Iann’s family: my heart goes out to you! We grew up together on the farm. Our dads were brothers and Iann and I were best friends. So glad we stopped for a visit a couple of summers ago. She’s always been special to me. So sad and so sorry for your loss.

I am very sorry for your loss! My mother was Sharon Holmes, she was married to Gerald Holmes. My mom always talked so highly of Iann, and I know before my mother passed her and Iann always stayed in close touch! I am certain they are greeting each other again now in heaven!!

Your Mom was such a kind, caring and generous lady.
During the time I knew Iann, she would drop off garden produce and then when she went to live at St. Martin’s she would share some of her Bingo winnings (she knew how I loved chocolate) and some extra greetings cards.
We met through Secret Sister at Our Savior’s. Through those years we shared many emails, cards and letters. I loved hearing from her and she would always make me smile!
I know how very proud Iann was of her family. She was a great friend.

Dear Andy, Nick, and Joe, and family,
Your mom was one of two people who kept me a part of the Holmes family. Her annual Christmas card was one of the things I most anticipated every year … and then came the birthday cards – on time, and for every one of my family members every single year. With a balloon or confetti, a bag of seeds, and the most recent one for me, tea. Goodness, was she thoughtful. My youngest, Sara’s birthday was in June; hers will be the last card we will receive. And I did think how I won’t hear about you boys this Christmas; it makes me sad.
I also want to acknowledge how Aunt Iann took my brother under her own wing and cared for him. I don’t know all of that story; but I know she has been the matriarch of the Holmes family in the best ways.
I cherish the photos I have from my trip with my daughters to South Dakota two summers ago. As it’s already been stated – Aunt Iann was the proudest of all for being your mom. She pored over each of your pictures on her walls and told us to the best of her ability all about each of you. The memory of her with me and my girls makes me smile.
Aunt Iann, you are the best. Thank you for loving me, even when circumstances were hard and weird. …Thank you
