Imogene Mary Hieb, 90, of Harrold, went to her Heavenly home on Friday, February 7, 2014 at the Highmore Health, Highmore, SD.

Funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at the Harrold Auditorium with Pastor Kori Lehrkamp officiating. Burial followed at Medicine Hill Cemetery, Harrold.  Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 11, 2014 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer and Eastern Star service, all at Luze Funeral Home, Highmore.

Imogene Mary was born February 27, 1923 on the family farm three miles south of Holabird, South Dakota to William Arthur and Lola Mabel (Harter) Ellerton. She was the seventh of eight children.  She received her education at the South Holabird country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Highmore High School with the class of 1940. She never was able to fulfill her dream of being a teacher.

On March 7, 1943 she was united in marriage to Leo Hieb at the Methodist Parsonage in Highmore, SD.  To this union five children were born.  They became members of the Highmore United Methodist Church in April of 1943 then transferring to the Harrold United Methodist Church in 1947.

Imogene and Leo lived with their family on a farm southwest of Harrold from 1947 to July 1993, when they moved into the Pleasant View Apartments in Harrold, SD.  She was a devoted wife, mother and helping hand on the farm.  She was a lifetime member of the South Dakota Farmers Union, serving as local and county Educational Director, and county President.  She belonged to several organizations including: the R Doing Club, KYB Club, United Methodist Church Board, Harrold Senior Center as Treasurer, Eastern Star member for 25+ years, holding several offices, Highmore Health Auxiliary past Treasurer, and U.M.W. where she held several offices, including President at the time of her death.

Her enjoyment was spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, doing 1000 or more piece puzzles and crossword puzzles, taking care of her plants, visiting with friends and neighbors, and cooking for unexpected guests.

Grateful to have shared in her life are her children: William Hieb of Armour, SD, Kathleen (Jerry) Speirs of Hill City, SD, Kelvin Hieb of Rapid City, SD and Judy (Larry) Schnabel of  Eureka, SD; five grandchildren: Doug Speirs, Christine Walz, Shawn (Emily) Speirs, Theresa (Jason) Robinson and Thomas (Meghan) Schnabel; 10 great-grandchildren: Casey Hieb, Justina, Dante, and Taya Robinson; Henry and Carl Walz; Madison Speirs; Peyton, Mallory, and Danyelle Schnabel; five step-grandchildren and their families: Robbie (Dana) Geuther and family, Kristi Geuther and family, and Kristie Wyly and family, Patrick Covey, and Shana Hinsin; one brother, Wayne (Alma) Ellerton of Ft. Myer, Florida; two sisters-in-law: Deloris Ellerton of Huron, SD and Florence Ellerton of Custer, SD.; numerous nieces, nephews, and a very special friend, Ellen Ramsey of Harrold, SD.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leo in March, 2003; one son: Gerald Lee in 1961; one grandson: Travis Lee Hieb in 1998; four brothers: Raymond, Claire, and two in infancy: Lloyd and Lyle; and two sisters: Fern Johnson and Vivian LaFurge

  3. My prayers are with you at this sad time. I think my Dad was a relative. His mother was Magdelena Hieb from Tripp SD. When I was a young girl I remember going to there farm south west of Harold. We thought we were lost and there was a man fixing fence so we stopped and asked where Leo Hieb lives. And the man was Leo. Small world. My folks Adolph and Mabel are both gone now. Mom passed away in Dec.My sympathy to you all. Lori

  7. So sorry to hear about Imogene.  She was a special lady.  I used to see her when she came to the Nursing home to help with Bingo and the bake sale.  I will miss seeing her. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
