Irene Grace Middletent, 65, of Fort Thompson, journeyed to the spirit world Friday, March 9, 2012 at the Aberdeen Health and Rehab, Aberdeen, SD. 

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, March 15, 2012 at Christ Episcopal Church, Fort Thompson with Mother Liz Powers, Father Kim Fonder and Ken Reed officiating. Burial followed at All Saints Cemetery, Fort Thompson.  A wake service was held at 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at the church.

Irene Grace was born January 9, 1947 in Pierre, South Dakota to Ernest and Adeline (Red Day) Middletent.  Her early years were spent in Big Bend where she attended elementary school and later the family moved to Fort Thompson, South Dakota where she attended school and later attended Flandreau Indian School.

Irene enjoyed quilting and putting puzzles together.  She spent most of her life in Fort Thompson.  Because of failing health, she entered the Beverly Healthcare Center in Pierre, transferred to Sanford Healthcare Center in Chamberlain and later Sanford Health in Sioux Falls.

Grateful to have shared in her life are her siblings: Donald Middletent, Gary Middletent, David Middletent, Winifred Middletent and Caroline Middletent; three sons: Allen Middletent, Sheldon Middletent and Weldon Middletent; one daughter, Georgett Dillon; five grandchildren: Daniel Middletent, Tia Middletent, Drayk Dillon, Justin Middletent and Nikita Dillon; and many nieces and nephews.

Greeting her in the Spirit World along are her paternal grandparents, John and Kate (Little Dog) Middletent; maternal grandparents, Treon and Emma (Fast Walker) Red Day; parents, Ernest, Sr. and Adeline (Red Day) Middletent; three brothers: Jack, Stanford and Victor; and three sisters: Ernestine, Victorine and Ruth.

Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Irene’s arrangements.

  1. I took care of Irene at the Care Center in Chamberlain. I didn’t know her long, but loved her very much. She was a very caring person and had a great personality. She will be missed.
