Jake Van Bockel
July 18, 1926 ~ March 7, 2010
A celebration of Jake’s life was held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at Grace Bible Church in Gettysburg with Pastor Dick Nickel officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in the Gettysburg Cemetery. A visiting time was held from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m Tuesday, March 9, 2010 with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Luce Funeral Home in Gettysburg.
Jake Van Bockel was born July 18, 1926 in a granary on the home place near Gettysburg to Peter and Rena (Heimstra) Van Bockel. He attended school through the 8th grade in Roy Township.
On February 22, 1950 at Gettysburg he married Doris Crane. They made their home on a farm east of town where they raised their family. This is also where Jake spent his entire life except for a few short years that he spent in the Oahe Manor.
Jake spent a lot of his time farming and working cattle. He also enjoyed reading, hunting, bowling, and playing cards and dice. He was a member of the National Farmers Organization and Grace Bible Church.
Jake is survived by his three sons: Lynn (Peggy) Van Bockel of Clark, Layne Van Bockel of Lebanon and Robyn (Renea) Van Bockel of Redfield; 11 grandchildren: David (Carla) Van Bockel, Laura (Kevin) Shumaker, Andrew and Bretta Van Bockel, Jessie (Lance) Parrow, Jacob, Randy, Rebecca and Ryan Van Bockel and Cody Wilson; seven great grandchildren: Natalie and Alexa Van Bockel, Chas Shumaker, Meka Van Bockel, Destiney Parrow, Breelyn and Braxtyn Mendel; three siblings: Marie Umiker of Gettysburg, Gertrude Chance of Savage, MT and Melvin (Yvonne) Van Bockel of Little Falls, MN; and one sister-in-law: Lucy Van Bockel of Gettysburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Doris, and three siblings, Dick and Joe Van Bockel and Ada DeMaster.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Jake's arrangements.

I will miss Jake so much,every morning he would watch the clock and tell me I was either right on the nose or I was late 2 minutes or early 2 minutes.I got to know him when he came into the nursing home what a privilage it was. Cherish all the memories I know I will. You are in my prayers.

To Jake’s Family–I am so sorry for your loss. He was a kind man who ALWAYS said “please” & “thank you” when I handed out drinks at meal time. Whenever I have a cranberry juice, I will think of him. May you feel the warmth of God’s loving arms wrapped around you as you go through these difficult days & weeks. RIP Jake!
I remember Jake as being a happy fellow, one that always had a smile on his face when I saw him. Please accept my condolences to your family in your loss of Jake.
