James Martinmaas, 83, of Faulkton, passed away, Sunday, September 21, 2014 at the Faulkton Area Medical Center.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Faulkton with Fr. John Helmueller officiating. Burial followed in St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery. A wake service was held at 7:00 p.m., Monday, September 22, 2014 with visitation one hour prior, all at the church.

James A. Martinmaas was born January 23, 1931 in Faulkton, SD to Arnold and Matilda (Hardes) Martinmaas. He attended Faulkton High School, graduating in 1948. Following school Jim worked on the family ranch until enlisting in the United States Army, serving in Germany.

Upon his honorable discharge, he returned home and continued to ranch. Jim was a proud and successful Angus Breeder most of his life and was awarded the North Central Cattlemen of the Year in 1977. He served on the Game, Fish and Parks Commission for a number of years, including as vice chair in 1977 and enjoyed hunting and was an avid fisherman.

Jim is survived by his sister, Joane (George) Smith of Rochester, MN; his cousin, Pat (Barb) Miller of Rapid City; longtime friend, Dolores Selting of Faulkton and numerous other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Jim’s arrangements.

    We first met Jimmy on a football trip to the Vikings game sponsored by the Orient Coop. We ended up as cab partners in the cities and have been friends ever since. We shared many a meal, drinks, laughs and great conversation with him and Delores over the years. He will truly be missed. Rest in peace Jim. Hugs and prayers to you Delores…

    so sorry for the loss of Jim. Although I cannot say we were close as cousins, I remember him as having a quiet strength and a bright smile. I always looked forward to visit to the family ranch. Our thoughts are with you.
