Jasper was born on March 15, 1930 in Highmore, SD to Charlotte Emma (Deuter) and Ernest E Shaw. He was a child of the “Great Depression – Dirty Thirties”. Their family worked hard, as well as others of that generation to provide for their families and persevere during such troubling times. He attended Steptoe and Haas Country Schools, graduating from 8th grade in 1944. World War II began and many of the men were called to go serve their country, leaving many younger kids to do the farm work for their families and hire out to the neighbors so his higher education was put on hold, finally completing his GED in March of 1972.

Jasper married Patricia Anne Ellsworth on June 25, 1952 in Redfield, SD. He was drafted into the United States Army on July 26, 1954 serving at Fort Bliss, TX; Fort Belvoir, VA; Camp Kilmer, NJ; England, Germany, and France. While he was in Europe, he was a member of the 7962nd Army Unit’s 25-voice male choir, (“The Choraleers”) in Orleans, France. The group won the European Choral Contest and placed second in the worldwide Army finals. He came home July 6, 1956, and continued to serve his country in the South Dakota Army National Guard attaining Staff Sergeant retiring in 1989.

He had many different occupations throughout his lifetime always providing for his family.

Jasper served the Miller community for 28 years working at the City Police Department and Parks Department. He also served on the Miller Volunteer Fire Department for 19 years and was a life member of the American Legion, VFW Post #3214, Marine Corp League, SD Peace Officers Association; SD Firefighters Association, Hand County Senior Citizens, Ducks Unlimited, Masonic Lodge of Ree Heights (Speirs Lodge), and Miller (St Lawrence Lodge # 39). He also joined the Consistory to be inducted into the Shriners. He was a member of the Greenleaf Methodist and First United Methodist Church in Miller serving on several boards, committees along with being a member of the church choir and Methodist Men’s for many years. Throughout his life, he was an avid sportsman; enjoying hunting and fishing.

He enjoyed working for the Parks Department and his many friends at the City of Miller, often receiving many compliments on the appearance of the parks. Jasper truly enjoyed life, his family and his many friends.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Patricia Anne Shaw; seven children and their spouses: Lowell (Karen) Shaw, Ronald Shaw, James Shaw, Judy (Keith) Morford, Jeanette (Kim) Benson, Joe (Rita) Shaw, and Mary Shaw; 11 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; sister, Charlotte Rickerl; and many nieces and nephews.
