Jean Takes The Gun, 56, of Eagle Butte, passed away, Wednesday, February 09, 2011 at her home.
Funeral services was held at 10:00 a.m. MST, Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Eagle Butte. Burial followed at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Thunder Butte. A procession formed at the four-mile junction east of Eagle Butte, at 5:00 p.m., Monday, February 14, 2011 with wake services being held at 7:00 p.m. at the church.
Jean Marie was born November 26, 1954 to Maxine High Elk-Takes The Gun and Harold Red Bird at the Cheyenne Agency. She lived most of her life in the Thunder Butte Community. Jean attended school in Eagle Butte, Dupree, Pierre and the Flandreau Indian School. Following her schooling Jean went on to work as a Dental assistant in Cheyenne River Dental Unit in Eagle Butte, SD & Puyallup, WA. During her younger years she enjoyed staying with her aunts, Gladys LeClaire and Martha Marrowbone.
Jean loved her family, especially all of her nieces and nephews. She also help her mother raise, John, Jerilyn, Joy, Jacin and Rochelle. She had one son, Jacin Paul Eagle Chasing and an adopted son, Damien LaPointe. Jean cherished her grandchildren: Morgan Peyton Valandra, Shai Maxell Red Bear, and Matthew Jacin Bobtail Bear; and her great granddaughter Brooke Allyn Scott-Red Bear, whom she checked on every day.
Jean’s life will be cherished by her sisters: Diane (Donavon) Pretty Weasel and Irma (Selby) Noisy Hawk; brothers: Byron (Carol) Red Bird and Leslie (Joni) Shooter; her aunt: Corrine High Elk; her uncle: Floyd (Lucille) High Elk; her companion Gilbert Agneaux and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, cousins, aunts & uncles.
During Jean’s spare time she loved to play cards, yahtzee, volleyball, crotchet, cut and iron diamonds for her mother and aunt Corrine’s star quilts. She especially enjoyed listening to Morgan singing and his stories about Powwow and friends, which always made her laugh as well as receiving cards/notes & pictures from Shai.
She was preceded in death by her son, Jacin Paul; her husband: Marion “Shash” Eagle Chasing Jr.; her mother, Maxine High Elk-Takes The Gun; father, Harold Red Bird; special nephew, John (John-John) Howard; her uncle’s: Ernest, Art, Wesley, Paul, Madrick and Theodore High Elk and one aunt Ilene High Elk Red Bear.
Luce Funeral Chapel of Eagle Butte has been entrusted with Jean’s arrangements.
