Jerry Mathew Chasing Hawk was brought into this world on July 10, 1959 in Red Scaffold, SD to Evan Chasing Hawk and Alice (Little Moon). He entered the spirit world at the Eagle Butte I.H.S. Hospital surrounded by his family on May 27th, 2018.

Jerry was raised in the community of Red Scaffold. He attended school in Red Scaffold and Eagle Butte. Jerry was always around his family. They were always roping and riding. Jerry loved the sport of Rodeo from a very young age. Jerry was very skilled with his leather work. He made many key chains, wallets, belts, and anything he could think of. He loved to help his friends and family with ranch work.

Jerry married Elvira White Wolf and out of this union, he had four children, Jerilyn, Tiffany, Tondee, and Tyrell. His family grew and he was a very proud grandpa of 17 grandchildren. If you saw Jerry, you would see a little guy named Levi also known as Beaver. Levi was his best friend/grandchild. Three things Jerry loved in his life were his family, the love of his life Elvira, and animals - especially horses. Jerry was involved in horse racing and was a world champion in the Indian Relay races. He was a bull rider, he was a saddle and bareback bronc rider, and he was a roper.

Jerry wore many hats. He could be a carpenter, mechanic, and so forth. He loved to work on the ranch whether it would be fencing or repairing the corral. Jerry was always putting his hands to work. He was very knowledgeable and taught us a lot about taking care of horses and the ranch. On his down time he would create many beautiful kinds of leather work. He was the one that we all learned to depend on when we needed something done. Whether the job was big or small he would help in any way he could. He helped rebuild the Red Scaffold Rodeo Grounds than he eventually built his own corral and barn. He always volunteered and helped behind the bucking shoots in the rodeos. If someone needed a partner in team roping, he would saddle up a horse - no problem - and grab his rope. He was an all-around cowboy. He served on the CRST Hiring Board, Cultural Center Board, and Personal Policy Board and he also worked for the CRST Housing authority.

If you came across Jerry, he would either tell you a joke or tease you. He had a good sense of humor and you always left with a laugh or smile.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Elvira White Wolf; his four children: Jerilyn Chasing Hawk, Tiffany Chasing Hawk, Tondee Chasing Hawk, and Tyrell Chasing Hawk; 17 grandchildren: Jesilyn, Breann, Rashad, Douglas III, Mason, McKadyn, Tracelyn, Prestyn, Kaesyn, Sequoia, Ayden, Chance, Chloe, Levi, Starliana, Starzalea, Starlaysia; sisters: Connie Chasing Hawk, Bernice White Eagle, and Arlene Chasing Hawk; and brother, Lyle Chasing Hawk.

He was preceded in death by his father, Evan Chasing Hawk; mother, Alice Little Moon; sister, Jolene Hearon; and brothers, Evan Chasing Hawk Jr. and Eugene Chasing Hawk.

Luce Funeral Chapel of Eagle Butte has been entrusted with Jerry’s arrangements.
