John Porter, 59, of Miller, passed away Thursday, October 28, 2010 at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 1, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church, Miller with Pastor Mary Ann Sheldon officiating. Burial followed at G.A.R. Cemetery at Miller.  Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, October 31, 2010 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at Reck Funeral Home, Miller.

Johny Norval Porter was born November 12, 1950, to Norval and Martha (Zemina) Porter in Miller, South Dakota.  He went to country school until 4th grade and then moved to Ree Heights where he attended 7th and 8th grade at Alpha Township Country School.  He graduated from Miller High School in 1969.  He graduated from the Mitchell Technical College for Baking.  He also attended various colleges throughout his life.

John worked as a library assistant at the Miller and Huron libraries.  He was also employed at the Miller Bakery for a short period of time.  He enjoyed gardening, reading, fishing, drawing, entering the SD State Fair with exhibits, singing at church, playing cards, playing bingo, caring for his cats and spending time with his siblings and nieces and nephews.

He was a member of the Greenleaf United Methodist Church for his entire life.  He enjoyed Bible study, singing at the capital and fellowship with his church members.

John’s life will be cherished by his two brothers: Al (Vanessa) Porter of Huron, SD and Darrel (Jan) Porter of Watertown, SD;  three sisters: Maxine (Buell) Maberry of Pierre, SD, Shirley (Brad) Anderson of Jackson, MN and Gloria Porter of Miller, SD;  ten nieces and nephews: Tara (Jason) VanBerkom, Lance Porter, Tyler Porter, Lucas Porter, Jody (Joshua) Sting, Daniel Maberry, Chandra Porter, Nicole (John) Schmeling, Kate Anderson, and Paige Anderson;  three great nephews: Nathan and Alex VanBerkom and Gavin Schmeling.

He was preceded in death by his parents Norval and Martha (Zemina) Porter.

Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with John's arrangements.
