John Pitz
October 16, 1956 ~ October 5, 2014
John William Pitz, 57, of Pierre and formerly of Gettysburg, passed away Sunday, October 5, 2014 at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls.
Memorial service was held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, October 12, 2014 at Luce Funeral Home, Gettysburg with Steve Foss officiating. Burial followed in the Gettysburg Cemetery.
John was born on October 16, 1956 to Harland and Florence (Aumiller) Pitz in Hoven, SD. He grew up on a farm 16 miles southwest of Gettysburg, attended Artichoke Country School and graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1974. Following graduation, John served in the United States Air Force. After spending some time in Florida, he returned to South Dakota. John was married for 10 years and had no children.
John was good natured, a hard worker, and always eager to learn new things and prepare for his next great adventure; for example- riding his motorcycle from Spearfish to Alaska. He loved motorcycling, skiing, sports, travel, sunsets, playing chess and spending time with his family. John was famous for his humor, catch phrases, infectious smile and laughter. He was a kind, thoughtful and generous man and will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his three sisters: Donna Knutson of Aberdeen, Betty (Alan) Glodt of Spearfish, and Judy (Jerry) Toennies of Cresbard; and many cousins, nieces and nephews, who loved “Uncle John”.
John was preceded in death by his parents, maternal and paternal grandparents and one nephew.
Luce Funeral of Gettysburg has been entrusted with John’s arrangements.

As a former Gettysburg resident I have fond memories of John while growing up – being close neighbors and attending Artichoke School. Deepest Sympathy to John’s family
No one can prepare you for a loss; it comes like a swift wind. But take comfort in knowing that John is now resting in the arms of our Lord.
