During his childhood and working life, Joe was a faithful member of St. Liborius Catholic Church in Polo. His father, Anton, was one of the founding members of St. Liborius in the late 1880’s. The two farms have been in continuous operation by the Hardes family since 1887 to the present time. Current owners and operators are a grand nephew, Kenneth Lammers, and his son Brady Lammers, who lives on the original homestead.

Alfie and Joe retired in approximately 1980 when they built a new home in Miller near Crystal Park. Alfie died in 1992. Joe was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Miller in his retirement years. In addition to his generosity to the church, he was a generous contributor to the Diocese of Sioux Falls and EWTN, the Catholic Religious Television Network.
