Jovin Raethz, 37, of West Hollywood, CA and formerly of Faulkton, SD, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2014 in New York, NY.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 24, 2014 at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Faulkton with Fr. Joji Itukulapati officiating. Inurnment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation was held from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, March 23, 2014 at the church with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service.
Jovin was born in Faulkton, SD on December 29, 1976 to Richard and Judith (Cunningham) Raethz. He attended and graduated from Faulkton High School in 1996.
Jovin moved to California in March 1997 and resided in different cities such as: Newport Beach, Long Beach, and many cities in the Los Angeles area before his final residence in West Hollywood. He spent the majority of his career in the mortgage industry. Jovin made the decision to go to school to further his education and ultimately decided to do what he loves. Jovin was determined to succeed as a personal trainer and made it his mission to remain healthy and be a support and inspiration to others. He made an impact on every person given the opportunity to work with him.
Jovin had a passion and was committed to raising money and awareness for the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, as his mother Judy has suffered from this terrible disease for over 30 years. He has been participating in MS Walks for years.
Jovin had a passion for family, friends and life. He made the most of every moment and created memories with those close to him every day. Even those that met Jovin for the first time had a lasting impact on them. He has always been so proud of his South Dakota upbringing.
Jovin is survived by his parents Richard and Judith Raethz of Faulkton; one sister, Shenelle Raethz Sepulveda of Fountain Valley, CA; one brother, Jerod (Lisa) Raethz of Faulkton; five nieces: Bailey Raethz (15), Kayla Sepulveda (15), Haley Sepulveda (11), Ella Raethz (10) and Aedyn Raethz (7) and a host of family and friends from California.
Jovin was preceded in death by his sister Carmelie Ann Raethz, and grandparents Irvin & Viola Raethz and Joseph & Theresa Cunningham.
Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Jovin’s arrangements.

Jovin was my neighbor for a couple of years in Los Angeles. It was such a pleasure to have a sweet young man to call my friend. My heart is with his family, may you find peace in knowing he touched the lives of many.

I am lost for words for when my friend moved I knew I would see again. Now I know again could be along time.

I can’t put into words how sorry we are. We think of you as family & it has been just heart breaking, especially for Eric. Jovin will be missed by all that he came in contact with.
I will never forget what a good friend Jovin was in high school. What a sweetheart he was. He would always listen and offer encouragement if you were feeling down. He had a gift for making others feel special.

I may have only hung out with you a few times but in the times I did see you, I will always remember and appreciate the laughs, your smile and gentle nature.
In subsequent social encounters and seeing your journey over the last few years, I can say I’ve been inspired by having your presence in my life.
From moving from the corporate world into personal training, photos of you and your dog, to the support and charity towards MS and the love for you Mom; everything I saw was beautiful.
All I can say now mate, is I wish I’d gotten to know you even better; I wish you nothing but peace, you’ve left a hole in many people’s lives, but I know now you’re all around us.
I will never forget your smile and positive energy. Cheers fella, fly high and watch over us.

Dick and Judy, Jerod, Shelly and families–We can’t even begin to put into words the sorrow we have in our hearts for all of you in losing Jovin. Such a beautiful spirit lost at such a young age. We viewed his video on Facebook and we hope you can have some joy in your hearts for the many people he had an impact on in his short journey through life. It is impossible for us mere mortals to be able to understand why something like this has to happen but we pray that the grief you carry with you now will someday be replaced by sweet memories. Our love to you all.

We are so sorry for your loss, it leaves a gaping hole in your family. Remember the special times you were able to share with him being so far away and smile when you think of him. I remember him in church as a little boy who was full of alot of energy and it was hard to be mad at him for misbehaving there cause he was so darn cute. I have thought of that often over the years and smile each time i think of it. Peace, love, and prayers to your families.

I was just thinking about him the other night, from when we used to fight over “Jovin’s blanket” at Doris’s house to the one-act play trip to Vermillion to working at DJ’s…There are so many good memories to remember his with. My deepest sympathies to all his family and friends, there will never be anyone like him again.
